Question:

High insurance on my Dodge truck.....?

I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4. As I have just recently inquired, quite a few people contribute it to age and tickets. I am 35 years old, and had a ticket, maybe, 15 or so years ago, (speeding), and an accident, (I was hit from behind). I live in NC. So why the high insurance? ($142 a month.... full coverage). The insurance company is Nationwide. This the only insurance company that I have had.

I would like a rep., With experience, if possible to answer.

Thank-you.

  1. That is high, it looks like they are gouging you.  You should look around other companies to see if you can find a better rate.  Try getting an online insurance quote.  This will quickly check all companies in NC and find you the lowest price they offer.  You could then compare this to your current company.  If it is cheaper you could call Nationwide and ask them why yours is so high, or just switch companies

You can get a free online quote at http://www.auto-insurance-knowledge.com/...

  2. Wow, that's expensive.  I'm not a rep, but I've had some experience with insurance companies.  They're all different on what they use to determine your rate, at least in my experience and with talking to some of them to find out.  Some use credit ratings, 3 year driving history, 5 year driving history (which is self reported at this point), comp. claims at different time intervals too.  Your best bet is going to be to shop around, get a few quotes.  I would recommend Esurance (this is my carrier....way cheaper then my previous company, All-State), Progressive and Geico.  You can get all these quotes on each respective website and they're all secure too.  I'd be willing to bet you'll get a quote a heckuva lot cheaper then you're paying now.

Oh, and on your truck, I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota....my progressive agent told me that it had a high safety rating, so that reduced my rate because of that.  I don't imagine your vehicle has anything to do with the high rate, might just be the company.

    Good luck man.

  3. That doesn't sound especially high for full coverage insurance.  But to find out for sure, talk to an independent agent, give him your information and the level of coverage you now have so you are comparing apples to apples, and let him look through his data base to see if he can do better for you.

  4. I think that is a bit high also.  It's always a good idea to compare quotes from different insurance companies every year before you renew your policy.  Just because your insurance company offered you the best rate when you signed up doesn't mean they will have the best rate any more.

The best thing you can do is to get some free quotes (3-5) online from different insurance companies.  If you find a company that offers you a cheaper rate, then switch your insurance over to them.

    Good Luck!

  5. I believe your answer lies in the 4X4 situation.  Insurance is normally higher on vehicles that tend to go off road.  Maybe you should ask you insurance rep (out of curiosity) what your insurance premium would be if it wasn't a 4X4...?
