High school Junior questions?

I'm thinking about switching from being homeschooled to going to a small public school.

I know NOTHING about public schools... I've been homeschooled all my life, but i know i'm not learningwhat i need to know.

Please tell me everything you think i might need to know in as much detail as possible... I really know nothing.

How many books will i have to read?

Will i have to read/speak infront of a class? (i'm sorta shy and the thought sorta bothers me.)

What time do must schools start?

What time do most schools end?

How much time do you normally have between classes?

Since i'm 17 (going to be 18 in March) Will i be picked on for being older? or is is not that big of a deal?

What level of math should i know?

How much homework would i have?

Please just explain some of this stuff and anything else you think may be important for me to know. Since as you can tell, I'm clueless.

Thanks,

casey.

  1. How many books will i have to read?

You will be assigned to read at least 4-6 books during the year. Don't worry, you read them as a class and you're assigned pages to read and homework to go with the pages.

Will i have to read/speak infront of a class? (i'm sorta shy and the thought sorta bothers me.)

Yes you will have to no matter what. Probably short speeches that are about 2-5 mintues long.

What time do must schools start? around 8

What time do most schools end? about 2:30 or 3

How much time do you normally have between classes?

    5 minutes

Since i'm 17 (going to be 18 in March) Will i be picked on for being older? or is is not that big of a deal?

It's not big deal. You'll be envied if anything.

What level of math should i know? Well at least a junior. That is something that they will assest when you enroll.

How much homework would i have? TONS. Junior year is your most homework heavy year. But senior year is a like a va-k it's awesome :) the year of tons of homework is well worth the senior year.

  2. OK even though I go to a Catholic school I can still answer most of these questions.

Books: You'll have textbooks in almost every subject but as far as novels for English 3-4

Reading in front of the class: sometimes but not often depends on the teacher.

Time: 7:30-2:30   2-3 minutes between classes, Lunch, and maybe a recess during the day depending on the school

Being older: Don't know everybody in my class is around the same age

Math: You should be taking Algebra II and know Algebra I and Geometry

Homework: Depends on how much your teachers give. Sometimes it's the usual amount and sometimes it varies. Most of my teachers don't assign written homework on a test day or the day before a test so we can study.

  3. How many books will i have to read?

    - If you're going into grade 9, we read 2 in English haha. They were short. (I'm in academic English, I don't know what province you're in but it's the highest level of the three)

Will I have to read/speak in front of a class?

    - Yes you'll have to present presentations and projects and read things text books when the class is reading together (in almost every subject.)

What time do most schools start?

    - Here most high school's start at 8:20 or 8:30.

What time do most schools end?

    - All high school's here end at 2:30

How much time do you normally have between classes

    - We have 5 minutes; depends on the school.

Since I'm 17 will I picked on etc...?

    - I don't think it'll be a big deal, the kid's would have to be real douches to make fun of you for that.

What level of math should I know?

    - It really depends on the level of the class you're taking; I'd talk to the school about that.

How much homework will I have?

    - It depends a lot on the teachers. I had next to none but I friends who had 2-3 hours a night. (Both of us doing the highest level)

  4. I would say transitioning from homeschooling to public school at ur age would be very hard

Homeschooling doesnt prepare you socially and mentally for the world the way public school does

Maybe u should talk to the school administrators and they could help u

  5. books - you read whatever the class teacher assigns you and a couple of your own choices

speaches - sometimes but not alot, normally only for reports

start/ends - 8am to 2:45pm ( could differ from place to place though)

breaks - normally 5 mins but you have long study halls and lunch

age - you will be fine, alot of people are 17-18 when they are senoirs, 16-17 when they are juniors

math - at least calculus but it depends what you school offers

homework - 1 to 2 hours per class ( some long term projects also )

i would plan to get home from school and take a 30 min break then start your homework/chill with friends, then have dinner and after that do all your homework. this will help you not get behind on your homework.

attend school dances/parties/sporting events, this will help make you more friends and get you used to school.

be a good all around person and stay on top of your classes but dont be a stuck up teachers pet

join a sports team - help you make friends and keep you in shape

apply for colleges in as quick as you can, so you dont end up like some people in their last week as a senior trying to find colleges haha

    good luck

  6. you kn oit really jus depends on what school you go to

at my high school school starts at like 7:20 and ends at 2:15

nobody should make fun of u cuz ya age and if they do they childish and need to get over there self

i never had to speak in front of my class

and we usually have 5 min, between classes

i didnt have a lot of homework

    and in math idk lol

and we only read one book

    hope i helped you

  7. wow! thats a load of stuff but have no fear i'll help you. public school isnt that fun but the friendships you make is what is going to make you come back. public schools are normal places you know, just 30 kids in  a class, some joke, some pay attention, and some dnt even come to class. for the books, you read 2,3 literature works each year maybe 4 if ur teacher is a psycho. you got a math book, science book, history book, and any other important classes. my school started 7:30 but some start 8:20 idk but its any where from 7:30 to before 9:00 so waking early is a must. dont miss the school bus cuz its rele stressful to be late. schools ends anywhere from 2:20 to 2:50. each class is normally 45 mins or under no less than 40 mins usually. average juniors take algebra 2 but if ur rele smart, take pre-calc..its a good challenge. and hw depends on the teacher, look to do about 3-4 hours of hw per week. thats if u dnt bs it. anymore questions just email me at jradeyemo@yahoo.com

plz answer my question, Thank you

  8. you just have to do what the teachers tell you.

    be yourself.

youll read the books teachers give you.

you have to talk infront of the class somtimes.(im really shy too, but youll get over it)

school usually starts at like 7ish and ends at 2p.m

i dont think you have anytime in between classes. because its junoir high.

just listen to what the teachers are teaching.

level of homework depends on if your teacher is mean or not.

if you dont understand somthing got ask your teacher right away cause if you dont youll just get nore comfused

  9. Im going into 10th grade and last year we read about 3-4 books depending on the school. yes you will need to speak in the front of the class. mine starts at 730 and ends at 230.i have 3-5 mins. no you might be respected some. algebra. an hour or two of homework hope this helps and i wouldnt try to go to ur locker after every class that kind of slows you down i recommend 5 star 5 subject notebooks.

  10. I'm an incoming senior. I'll answer your questions as they turned out for me over the last year. Answering all your questions:

books depend on your english teacher. i was in an advanced class and read about 20.

speak in front of a class? for certain projects, yes. but no one's going to make fun of you... everyone has to do it. just laugh about it and it'll be cool.

    mine started at 8 am

    ended at 2:40

    six minutes between classes

no... nobody's going to know your age unless you tell them

at least pre-algebra for math, and that's the lowest acceptable level

homework varies, about 45 mins-2 hrs per day

anything else- first impressions are important. if you clam up you'll be a loner for the rest of your time.

say hi, smile, talk to people.

  11. 1. well i only have to read books assigned in my english class (honors) so its about...five-seven a year?

    2. Yes, but only occasionaly. the only time youll actually have to be the big center of attention is if you take a speech class, which is required for graduation in my school.

    3. 7:30-8 AM

    4. 3:00 PM

    5. 5 minutes

    6. no biggie! i wouldnt go around spreading it though lol just if they ask

    7. Passed FST?

    8. About 2-3 hours/night, not too much i have less becauase study hall time and free class time is a good time to get most of it done

:) just be yourself and you'll be fine! being part of a public school is a great experiance ot meet people and take advantage of your teenage years!

  12. Haha, just watch Mean Girls.

    :D

On a serious note, you usually need to take a series of tests before the school system knows exactly what grade you're eligible for.

Book reading is generally for literature, and when I was a junior we read about 4 books.  But it really depends on your class scheduling and teacher.

School for me started at 8:20 and ended at 3:20.

The age really isn't a big deal...there are kids there who graduate at age 20.

math...um, you should know up to geometry or algebra II.  Again, it depends on your school system and requirements.
