Today was our second day of school (freshman) and gym teacher told us tomorrow we have to bring clothes and a lock and stuff. How much stuff should I bring and do I bring it home the day I wear it? There are about 100 people (all grades) in my gym class and I DO NOT want to change in front of people! I have no idea how thats gonna work. Arg I have P.E EVERY day and im not gonna want to smell like c**p they say you can take showers but then my hair will be wet.

I have no idea how this gym thing works.

  1. OK, calm down first. I'm a freshman in high school, although our school doesn't start for a week. We have had to change in gym since 6th grade. Put everything you need in a bag. A plastic bag or something really simple, not pretty just practical and plain. Bring a change of clothes, a lock, and deodorant for sure. If you want to take a shower, soap. And a shower cap for your hair. Sometimes called conditioning or shower caps, you can buy these in any drug store. About changing, you have to. You might be able to change in a shower or bathroom stall instead of by your locker. If you do change by your locker, face the wall or locker, change quickly, and keep everything neat and organized. Try to get a locker near/surrounded by your friends. That should help. All ages stinks, but you'll be fine. I was this nervous too the first time in 6th grade, but now I don't even really think about it. Your friends and all the freshman are thinking about the same problems as you, talk to them.

  2. I'd reccomend you change out your gym clothes once a week, unless you get really sweaty or covered in mud one day. Trust me, it's a lot easier to just put them in your locker and you don't have to remmeber to bring clean clothes the next day.  Bring them home to wash on Friday and bring a clean set on Monday. Oh and leave your shoes in your locker unless you need them for something else.

Bring deoderant and body splash, and makeup to touch up if you wear it.

I was a little self-concious about changing at first, but really everyone in there is the same as you. Nothing you have to worry about. If you really are object to it, you could go into the bathroom and change.

Pull your hair back in a ponytail and wear a streatchy headband.

Everybody goes through gym, honey. You don't have to worry about it. And if you really get lost, the teachers will help you.

  4. Depending on the period you have gym, it could be good or bad.  If it's earlier in the day, you're going to have to prepare a bit more.  At every high school it's different, but at mine, they MADE us change into gym clothes.  If you want to pass the class (or at least get a decent grade), you'll want to change.  I would recommend bringing two gym outfits so that you still have one when the other one needs to be cleaned, and also just in case you forget to bring one back after cleaning it at home.

Make sure the outfits are made of 100% cotton (or as close as you can get to it), because cotton breathes the best and will make it so that you sweat less.

Other things to bring to keep in your locker:

    -an extra stick of deodorant

    -body spray

    -a refillable water bottle

    -a small towel and washcloth

The deodorant, water bottle, and body spray are self-explanatory, and the towel and washcloth you can use if you get too sweaty.  Just wet the washcloth in the sink a little bit so you can wipe off the sweat.  Make sure you rinse out the washcloth after every use, and bring it home at least every two days to wash though, otherwise it can get really smelly just from being damp (even just from the water), and then it wouldn't help at all.

If you wear makeup, make sure you bring extra in case you have to re-apply.

As far as your hair goes, try and wear it up as much as possible.  If your hair is long, wear it up in a bun so that it's completely off your neck.  This will ensure that you sweat as little as possible.

In addition, the main reason why I added the bit about the water bottle is because the more you drink, the less likely you are to sweat.  When you sweat, it's your body trying to cool itself down.  Drinking water cools your body down as well, so your body won't need to sweat as much.

High school gym isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be--you've just gotta know how to get through it (which is made easier by good friends ;))
