I am going to high school next year and I want to try out for one of the teams. The only problem is apparently I'm going to be gone for the tryouts at summer camp and I didnt kniow this untill like a few weeks ago. also I may have to miss a few practices because of that. i'll be back soon after the practices start but still. making this team is really important to me because I love the sport and hate being stuck on the sidelines watching everyone else play. earlier last season I sprained my wrist and it made me be stuck on the sidelines and that sucked. What I'm asking is do you think that this will impact my chances of making the team and staying on it if I make it. also do you think the coach will let me try out early or something. I'm really worried because I have wanted to play volleyball fo this school for like 3 years and now I have the chance. The camp is also non-refundable and thats why I have to go

Please Help

  1. Hey there, I can give you my perspective from what I do when a player can not come to tryouts.  I have had it happen a few times.

First thing is to make sure the coach knows you.  In our school we have a ton of open gyms in the summer and a camp for all high school players.  Make sure you find out from you future coach what is going on during the summer and participate as much as possible.

Also when you feel comfortable let your coach know that you will not be at tryouts and ask if there is another time that you can tryout.  In our state you would not be allowed to tryout before.  At our school, we let the girls come to practice for a couple of days and have them work with the team.  Then we let them know if they made the team.

I would make sure your parents touch base with the coach and the AD as well, but as a high school player, coaches want to hear you tell them first (I certainly expect my players to talk with me about any issues regarding volleyball).

Believe me, if you can help the team, the coach is going to want you on the team.  Coaches are very competitive and want to put together the best team.  There may be some consequences because you are starting late, but after a few matches you should be accepted just like every other player.

The most important thing is talk with the coach and be seen by the coach before hand so they know you are interested and they know you can play (also don't schedule anything next summer during tryouts!!!!).

By the way, this is a great question...you certainly are not the first person to have this problem and most girls would not even know where to go for help.  I wish you the best of luck!!!!!

  2. Just go and talk to the coach, and maybe make a tape to show her what you can do

  3. before you go to summer camp find a time to show your coach that you are good at volleyball and your coach will see how good you are and maybe when you go back your coach will tell you if you made it

  4. First of all, don't put too much expectation that the coach will let you play.  There is political issues involved in HS ball.  If the coach is reasonable & fair, they will let you play coz' of your abilities, if not, they will show their favoritism to some suck players.

Talk to the coach with your PARENTS PRESENSCE.

Let your parents do the talking(you shut up) and

YOU, show what you got as a volleyball player.

IMPRESS  the coach with your athletic abilities.

Don't give up if the coach play favoritism.

Have your parents record everything on video tape from tryout, pratice to interscholistic matches.

If things don't go well in a year, show them to the Board of Directors or AD(hopefully VB coach is not the AD).

    Last option, change school.

Report back here how things go for you, OKAY?!

    Have fun playing the sport.

  5. Talk to the coach.  Maybe you could get a ride from your summer camp to the tryouts?

  6. Go talk to the coach it will show them that you want to b there and thats a good thing wen it comes to trying out. I missed soccer tryouts becasue of a funeral and wat they let me do was pratice with the team and she thought i was good enough and put me on the team. I couldnt start the first game though because i didnt haave enough practices
