Question:

High school gymnastics team requirements?

Hi. I just started my freshman year in high school, and i was thinking about trying out for the gymnastics team. I was wondering what the requirements were to be on a high school team. I have a clear hip and kip on bars, but i don't have any release moves or a giant swing. My vault is a handspring. I have a round off back handspring back tuck and front handspring on floor and a back walkover on beam. Would this meet the requirements? I'm not a club gymnast, and have never competed before. I just do classes at the local gym, and i didn't know if you had to do club to compete high school.

  1. Yes, you'll be fine. Minimum requirements to be on our high school team are handspring or half on vault, cartwheel on beam, front handspring, standing back handspring, round-off back handspring. Yes, most of the girls are going to be doing back layouts and giants. But don't worry it's only your freshman year. So go out for it.

  2. you'll definitely make it most schools except anyone but you sound really good, i just made my high school team and I'm not anywhere near as good as you! good luck at tryouts!! but you wont need it :]

  3. It all depends on your school's gymnastics team. Some schools have very talented and dedicated gymnasts who spend not only hours a week at high school gymnastics practice, but also many hours at club practice. If the team has a lot of girls trying out and many with strong skills it will be tougher to compete for a spot on the team. On my high school gymnastics team everyone made the team, but only the girls who had solid level 8 skills on an event could compete on that event.

The best way to find out what is required to be on the team is to talk to some girls who are currently members. They will probably be very excited to hear you are interested and can help you out with any questions you may have. Good Luck!
