  1. If you didn't qualify, get tutors - that's the next best thing.  Have the special educators at your school recommend specific tutors for the classes you need help with the most.  Getting angry isn't going to do you ANY good.  Generally, IEP's have nothing to do with college entrance unless you have a "modified" diploma upon graduation.

  2. EDITED to provide context with information that followed this posts original messsage:

"By law the parents have to do what the parents say"

    ...wrong.

An IEP team makes a judgement as a team as to what is the best placement for a student based upon testing AND their knowledge of the student.

The parents are part of the team, but do not have final say.  They do have the right to appeal the findings of the team, but they have to have reason to get a decision overturned.  And by reason I mean evidence that the IEP or placement otherwise is not providing FAPE ( a free, appropriate public education) for their child.

If your team judged that an IEP wasn't appropriate for your needs, your parents can ask why.  So can you.  A 504 plan can give you the access to a public education that is the mandate.

The law does NOT state that the school district has to give you every accomodation possible to maximize your education.  They are required, however, to provide equal access to education.  This means that you get what you need to receive an education.  Need does not provide for maximization, just access.

  3. The IEP outlines in what areas you qualify for special ed support and what changes / accommodations will be made to support you.  It should also establish benchmarks so progress toward your goals can be measured.

An IEP will not affect the college you attend, however your grades will.  An IEP or not, you are responsible for getting an education.  If you don't understand, tell the teachers, go for tutoring, etc.  Most teachers are thrilled when a student wants to learn.

I have two kids, one is still on an IEP in Middle School, the other is a Junior in High School and is now off the IEP, mainstreamed in all classes and holding a B average.  She wants to be an elementary teacher.  So, the program works!

  4. The 504 Plan typically covers what the IEP doesn't. But even if you have the 504 you should still have in there what you should have and what will help you.

The fact that it has been documented will not affect you going to college or not. I had a 504 plan and I went to school and received my masters. Most colleges have a department that help students with disabilities and trust me they helped me out a  bunch.

But if you want more, have your parents go to the school board and throw a fit. By law the schools have to do what the parents say (but they don't tell you that).

If the principals won't budge go to the superintendent and the school board.

  5. the main differences with an IEP is taht you get the help of a special education teacher and maybe a modifeied curriculum/graduatrion requirement

otherwise yuo can get most accommodations with the 504-

    extended time, assistive technology, etc..

you can fight it-you will need to get an independent evaluation-you should've been given a booklet about your rights in special ed-it should outline teh steps to take to fight teh decision
