Question:

High school honors courses?

Freshman year I took honors English and history, sophomore year I took the same plus honors math (had to because of a schedule problem, but actually got a 94 on my regent despite struggling to maintain 80s in the class), and now that junior year is coming up, I decided not to take honors math again and instead take honors chemistry. But I prefer the teacher who does Regents (aka basic) chemistry, and my schedule as it is may end up not including too many of my friends (seems trivial, I know, and I'm almost embarrassed to admit that's a factor in this decision). I don't want my school year to be solely academic in that I have no classes with friends, and I also am not 100% sure I can handle honors chemistry (math and science are not my strong suit, though English and history are).

My question is, do honors classes matter in terms of getting into college? Will it really hurt my chances of getting into certain colleges if I don't take honors chemistry? What should I be going with here? I see my guidance counselor Wednesday.

  1. you dont really need honors unless u r going straight to university

to go to college just maintain ur GPA above 3.0 u dont really need honors for colleges

  2. Honors classes will make a difference when a potential school looks at your high school transcript and see all the classes you take.  Just know that whatever classes you take, you can still have friends outside of class.  This should not be a determining factor.  Truth is once you go to college, you're lucky if even one friend is in the same school with you.  Everyone has their own ambition.

Talk this over with your guidance counselor on Wednesday.

  3. Honors/AP classes do look really good to colleges. They make you a lot more competitive against other applications. However, since you mentioned that science is not your strong suit, it would look better if you got a really high grade in a regular level class versus an "ok" grade in an honors class. If i were you I'd just stick with regular chemistry. Plus you mentioned that you may not have friends in the honors chem class...

  4. it looks good on your application if you take honors/AP

but all my teachers and counselors have told me

that getting an A in any regular class is much better

than getting a B in an honors/AP class

so think about what you're gonna take

if you think you can't handle it, then i suggest not to take the class
