High school in NYC?????????

Im going to 9th grade next year and I will be going to America in around 2 months. I will attend grade 9-10 or maybe 9-12 in a public school in nyc.

I hear people saying public school are bad and full of violence is that true?

I wanted to ask how are the schools in nyc?

Do you HAVE to play sports?

How long is recess?

How long is lunch?

How is math there.. do you use a calculator most of the time or ALWAYS your head?

Any news on homework??

any other info would be helpful.

no, i think in nyc pulic school is fine, you dont really have to play sport, but they do have the gym class that everyone must attent, lunch is likely about 45mins to an hours, and yea, in maths you can used calculator, the school will provide student calcualtor, and sometime they will need you to read the news for report for classes. it usually start from age around 14/15 to 18, it is 4 yrs for high school. But be sure get away from drama, there will be A LOTof drama in high school. And also, some of the school  will check your bag before you get in, some they didnt allow you to bring mp3, anyother drink beside of water to school. if you atten to big school in nyc, most of them hv student Id, some people need to pay for their lunch and some can get free lunch.

Usually in public school, you can meet a lot people from different country and different culture, the teacher are very nice too. If you go to school in nyc,most school will provide student a student transportation card that you can used it neither on subway or bus, that could be use from monday to saturday.

Not all public schools are bad.  Depending on the area you are in, the school could be good or it could be bad.  If you had the area, I could give you some more information.  But as to the answer to your questions, when I went to high school,

You have to play sports, it's part of PE.

There is no recess.

Lunch is about 45 minutes long.

Depending on the teacher, they may not let you use a calculator.  It just depends on the kind of teacher you get, some let you use a calculator, some don't.

I didn't have too much homework everyday, but I did have it every single day.  Depending on the level of class you take, there will be more or less homework, such as an honors math class would have more homework probably than a regular math class.

High school in NY is not so bad!  You sound a lot more worried than you should be.  Some people think its the best years of their lives.  Just make the most of it, if you are coming from a foreign country, a lot of people will be interested in you and you'll be able to make lots of friends!
