Okay, I really love the tennis sport but I never played the actual game, so I don't know much about it. And I've never been involved with sports other than gym class and stuff. I want to join the school's tennis team this year and I'm really afraid to. I had the coach as a gym teacher, I think she liked me and knows me alright but I am scared to death to join.

I don't know many tennis players in my school, I don't know if they'll be mean cause theyre good or something, I'm just scared.. help, any advice is good. I am so new to this i'm also petrified of the word "tryouts"

  1. Talk to the coach.  Depending on the size of your school, you may not have to "try out" meaning that if you join, you're automatically on the team.  The only way you're gonna know is if you do it.  So do it.

  2. Here's some honest advice: If you've never played the game, you certainly aren't going to improve enough by fall to be good enough to get into matches (assuming you aren't at a very small school). That means the coach will just take you on out of friendship or a desire to teach. He or she may not have that inclination. I assume there are no "cuts," but if there are you probably would be dropped.

So talk to the coach and get an honest answer. He may have you take lessons now, and then would be willing to have you practice with the team once it gets going. If he says honestly that he's not really willing to give you a shot, take him at his word. And be sure to ask about the team's reaction. Some might not be too welcoming toward a rank beginner, while others (maybe they are your friends) would be fine with it.

It's a tough situation. Good luck.

  3. Its ok we all go throw it the summer before my freshman year there was a small tennis camp for incoming freshman and i went it was me and 2 guys and then when i went to tryouts the following spring i was one of 15 freshman trying out along with about 25 sophomores and there where 8 spots on the team but even slightly knowing the coach over the others made me fell more comfortable and they will teach you all you need to know as for the girls not liking you i was one of 2 freshman to make the team that year and the other girl was all star volleyball and basketball and had friends on the team but all the girls turned out to be nice a willing to help. My best advise if you are even thinking about it tryout and don't care what people think. I going to be a junior and have just decides to tryout for the golf team high schools all about trying new things. Hope it helps.

  4. I wouldn't be too scared, most people shouldn't make fun if you're not that good, unless they're just plain rude. But I think just having fun while you're trying out is good, if you're nervous, bring a friend with you! That way it takes some of the nerves away.

And I'm almost sure there will be other players that don't know how to play that well either. But don't let your inexpierence stop you, you only get better from playing!

  5. just try out. I was nervous to try out for my school's team too but I did it and I am glad i did. Being on the team so much fun. You never know until you try
