next year im going to try out for the high school volleyball team...and it is the best in this region! im not sure if ill make it, i definitly have a chance though. my serve is really fast and i can jump serve, top spin, and do one of those floater ones. my hit is really hard too. im pretty good at bumping too. the only problem is that when im in a game, i get really freaked! i dont know why, but when the opposing team has a really good serve, i get a little nervous. i mess it up a lot because of that and it sucks! it sort of in a sense like intimidating! my coach has been saying to move your feet right when teh server hits the ball which helped a little but not completely.. and were going to washington this weekend and i dont want to go home because of this reason!! does anyone have any suggestions? any drills or something to help with this??!

  1. before the game , take some deep breaths  and relax and pic those are the people u practice on a daily basic with

  2. well most of volleyball is mental... and you're just syching yourself out. Don't worry if the other team has a good serve. see in your head you passing the ball perfectly to target. If u say u can do it... most likely u will.

  3. i dont think drills will help, but it's okay i was like that too when i first got put in games. i felt really nervous because it was something new for me. i think the only thing you can do is remember that if your coach put in the game, she/he has confidence in you, meaning you can do it! hate to sound corny but just remember to believe in yourself and act confident even if you're not. eventually you'll just learn to focus on the game and forget your nerves. hope i helped! :]

  4. Nervousness in serve receive is very common in younger players. Girls on my 15s club team tend to beat themselves up pretty bad after a shank. I tell them, "Don't let them pick on you, ask for that ball again and show them why they need to serve to someone else." This works sometimes, but sometimes not.

Like an outfielder reacting to hit in baseball, the biggest thing is to move your feet on serve contact, like your coach said, but also, you need to attack the serve, don't wait for the ball to move around in the air. You need to cut off the ball before the floater/topsin/curve takes effect.

Put it this way too, each point is an opportunity to get better at serve receive/defense. Embrace it and learn to enjoy the one on one aspect of server and passer and win that battle. Your own confidence is the difference between winning and losing.

  5. I played volleyball for a couple years and had the same problem. What helped is that if you practice in front of people (crowd) at practice or at open gyms you seem to calm down a little bit and become better at the same time!

  6. I don't think drills with help either. Its sounds like a mental problem (not in a rude way). When your in serve receive, think to yourself "serve me, serve right at me". I had serve receive problems too and this really helped. Like the other people said its a confidence thing. Good Luck!

  7. Just think to yourself "yea we can beat you just watch this"

  8. Just pretend this- "If I play really well, I win $1000000."
