High school volleyball (help! tryouts! please respond)?

okay, so volleyball is like my absolute favorite sport. Last year I was in grade 8 and my coach was like way intense and he made everybody improve so much, so now i would consider myself pretty good at volleyball. My position is as a setter, so i'm really good at vollying and I'm good at bumping and serving too, but I can't really spike very well. Here are my questions: during tryouts do you actually try out for a specific position or is it just a general skills type thing ( like would I try out as setter?). if a player is really good a bumping and vollying do they still have a chance of making the team if they're not good at spiking? what does a coach look for in a player at the tryouts.

Anything would help (i really want to make the team!)

thanks

  1. tryouts at each school are different but most of the time there are general skills but when hitting comes up the coach will probably have you set the hitters and then switch you out for another setter.

The coach is going to have you hit but you're a better so that doesn't have to be a strong point but the coach will probably help you out and get you better at hitting so take everything coach says and be positive about it I am sure you'll be fine since most coaches really want people that are good at passing and hustle.

Good luck I hope everything goes well

  2. i've been playing volleybal 4 the last 5 years it is more of a general skills thing at my school i am a hitter so i can help....try downballs downballs are when you stand a few feet away from a wall hit the ball diagnal at the ground it will bounce of the ground hit the all and comebck at you keep doing that over and over

  3. hey!

i am a sophomore on a JV team!

and if you are a setter here are some drills that my coach makes  our setters doo!

like stand by the wall and stet the ball in small circles and then after that set the ball way high then when it is coming down jump set! it seems hard but you should be able to do it!

and no you don't tryout for one position... you will just do what everyone else does and your coach will chose your position!

with your spiking... just work on your approach like here is  a good way to do it!

if you are right handed then you would go left right left right (as you land on your right you are slightly turning ) hop land and swing. DONT FORGET THE FOLLOW THREW! and snap your wrist so that the ball stays behind the 10 foot line!

  4. it depends on the coach about how you tryout, but mention that you want to set...and if you aren't setting with your hands yet, work on it.  practice with someone who is already pretty good at setting...the best way to learn is by example and repetition.

if you have solid ball control, you should make the team.  no team can have too many good passers.  hitting is great and very important, but the most important think is ball control, it all starts with the pass, if your team can't pass, you can't get a good set, which means you can't hit!

a coach looks for skills, and its good to already have experience with the fundamentals.  but one of the most important things to have is a good attitude.  nobody wants to coach someone who talks back, cops an attitude, or doesn't hustle.  stay positive, stay motivated, and show effort.  be confident.

  5. I don't know a lot about volleyball, but I would imagine (just like in any sport) that if you are "really good" at something that will help the team win, you will make the team.  Good luck.
