High school volleyball...?

im trying out for my freshman volleyball team in a few days, and am completely freaking out. what should i practice on before the tryouts??? what does the coach look for in a player??? do we need to bring our own equipment to the tryouts??? and what are the practices like???

  1. Before the trypouts, you should practice basic things like serving, setting, passing, and digging. A coach normally looks for not only good skills, but a good attitude. If you dont have a good attitude toward the coach, yourself, and your teammates, you are more than likely not to make the team. You should bring tennis shoes, knee pads, and practice clothing like shorts or spandex and a t-shirt to tryouts. Normally volleyball practices are little drills like you and a partner passing the ball back and forth, and/or you do spiking drills and such. Good Luck!!

    "This information sheet is designed to give both  returning players and prospective players information concerning tryouts in August, summer workouts, and individual summer camps

    Announcement:  Players will be required to purchase insurance this year to participate in all sports.  The exact cost is not known at this time but should be in the range of $40.

    Items that must be brought to first practice:  (be early to turn in forms)

    valid physical  (must state athlete is allowed to participate and be dated later than April 1, 2004)

    parent permission signature (signed as part of physical)

    birth certificate (if you have not played a sport at Daniel prior to this)

    Circuits will be run at the beginning of practice. For certain workouts the running program (see below) will be substituted for the circuits.  Skills development and drills will follow.  Final team selections will be made after three practice days..  Selection will be based on:  volleyball skills and experience, athletic ability (and potential), summer work (camps and workout diary), specialization players needed (we need a mix of setters, outside hitters, middle hitters, and defensive specialist), and progress made during the three day tryout period.

    Regular practices for both varsity and JV will begin as soon as teams are chosen.  Times will be determined during tryouts.  

    General Summer Workout Schedule (Varsity only):  

    The following running program must be done under the supervision of your parents and perhaps with a doctor. You are encouraged to progress beyond these if the proper foundation of cardiovascular fitness is in place.  Keep detailed records to show coaches at tryouts.

    On-Track workouts:  (can be done in any safe environment)

            2 x 800 meters (800 m = ½ mile), each in less than 5 minutes with 5 minute break  between (6-8 minutes rest)



            4 x 400 meters (400 m = ¼ mile), each in less than 2 minutes 45 seconds with 2-3 minutes between (6-8 min)



            6 x 100 meters, each relatively fast with limited break time between



           Varsity Players:  You are expected to be able to jog 2 miles, continuous running.  This is due to the limited amount of pre-season time we will have this year.  Players must complete this requirement before scrimmages begin.  Each varsity player is asked to complete 14 sets of our circuits between Spring Practice and Tryouts.  Each player should schedule a time to compete their circuits with Coach Jones.



    General workout schedule:  This is most important this year.

    May - 2-4 miles general running each week, the on-track workout 2 times each week, jump drills 3 times each week, with general stretching every day



    June - 3-5 miles general running each week, on-track workouts 3 times each week, jump drills 4 times each week, and stretching every day



    July - 5-7 miles general running each week, on-track workouts 3 times each week, jump drills 5 times each week, and stretching every day



    Jump Routines:  The following is a list of potential jump routines.  You are asked to do several of these each week.  Please do them carefully and correctly.  All of these will be demonstrated to you during Spring Practice.  Try to vary the ones you do so that all are familiar to you when tryouts begin.     A) jump rope    b) ski jumps     c)  tape incline     d) squat jumping jacks     e) spike approaches     f) frog jumps    h) hurdles       I) step ups   j) and the best of all- wall breakdowns!

You should've conditioned with the other girls b4 tryouts if you've never done this b4.  I never played vb and i conditioned and tryed out and didn't make it, but they said that i improved dramatically.  and is realy good for someone who's never done this b4.  They asked me to be the team manager, but I didn't make the team cause I'm freshmen and they dont get to participate as much, so i'm trying out for freshmen team in the spring.

    To answer your question, they want to c if u can pass, where u hit the ball underhand, serve (perferably overhand), set, hit, etc.  You need to be in shape, and try your best.  ALWAYS be honest and have a good attidutude.  Dont be late.  Have good sportmenlike conduct.  Bring your own stuff.  You can wear bball shorts or sofees or tight short spandex or cotton shorts.  Just wear a tshirt like a school tshirt that come in the mens sizes.  bring water and deoderant.  Knee pads help you play better cause then u dont have top worry about falling and getting hurt.  Also wear active ankles.  They protect your ankles and keep you from rolling or spraining them.  I didn't have the active ankles and I roled or twisted my ankle almost once a day.  I never sprained it tho....THEN i'd be in trouble.  You're not JUST gonna play vb the whole time.  You may have to run and do tough workouts.  Like jumping alot and pushups and situps.  PREPARE FOR THE RUNNING IT WORE ME OUT!!!!!!!  Pay attention and make sure you know when to be where, and if your tryouts or paractices go through lunch time and lunch isn't provided, BRING ONE!!!!!  Get alot of sleep too.

  6. wow, ive been there done that, youre going ot have so much fun! next year im going into my sophmore year so i definitly know how you feel. you should practice on your passing, which is really just bumping, your setting, and your hits, its a good idea to practice at the park or at a community center where they woudl provide you witha net. the coach usually looks for eagerness to learn, how fast you learn and your skills. you should bring kneepads to tryouts and dress accordingly, shorts\spandex and a tee shirt, practices are mainly drills to practice what you know, m,y practices ran three hours and warm ups are for like 15 mins and the last hour or so is devoted to conditioning. hope this helps and good luck!

  7. Well as a current varsity volleyball player i can tell you that there's really nothing to be worried about. In the first few try-outs the coaches will pretty much be looking at your fundamentals (i.e. serving, passing, hitting, digging abilities). On top of that, it's always good to show that you're willing to hustle and work hard, as that's a key attribute coaches like to work with in their players(especially in high school!). You may have some jitters going into it but be assured most of the other students will be feeling the same way. As for equipment, just bring adequate shoes to play in, knee pads and you'll be fine.   8. High school volleyball huh? Well it's definitely bound to be different  with your coach rather than everyone else's, but they will mostly be looking at your passing, including setting and hitting. Serves are also important, but if you have amazing passes and bad serving, they know you can do that, and they'll continue to work on your serving, because you can survive a game as long as you can pass.

    As far as equipment,

    indoor shoes (preferably specifically or volleyball, because they'll work fr you better, but any other ones will work)

    knee pads (your coach may or may not want you to have these, depending on how they coach, they may be convinced you shouldn't need to use them, but they are always good to have)

    shorts ( you simply CANNOT play volleyball in sweatpants)

    It's really important to have a good attitude and work at it. Volleyball can be intimidating.. it's really difficult to watch everyone who is really good and compare yourself to them. I did that, and that brought my self esteem way down.

    With your coach, listen to him/her. The reason they coach your team is because they know what they're doing. However, if your coach is constantly putting you down or something, speak up and don't take it. Listening to that will only make your performance worse because of it. Take their advice though, they know what the're talking about, but they may not always know how to help you, if that seems to be the case, ask one of the other players who is good at the skills you want to improve on to work with you.

    Last but not least. There is always drama and competition involved. Be prepared to not like some of the other players because of it.

    Volleyball is a great sport and it's really fun, but it can be really hard too, which is why I won't be playing this year.

    Go for it, at least to try it out. :-D
