High schooler tops Division 3 South Shore sectional individual championship
The Division 3 South Shore sectional individual championship ended on the 19th of October at the Glen Ellen Country Club in Millis. The tri-captain, Jason Lussier won the tournament with an imposing 73, 1 over par.
Lussier is a senior from Holliston, who won the match after holding a 2 stroke lead in a field of 90 golfers.
David Swanson finished the championship after ending as the runner up. Swanson is from Medfield and ended the tournament after a 2 shot deficit. The third place was held by Brandon Gould, a golfer from Foxboro, who collected a 76 with six golfers behind
him. Gould led the six golfers who scored a score of 78.
According to Chris Murphy, who is the Holliston coach, this is a big thing for Jason Lussier. He said that for a mere high school athlete, being the number one out of a field of 90 players is a huge triumph. The coach said that this probably would be a very
special day for any age of kid.
Lussier has been playing the competitive field for quite some time. He played the league for a while and some around the state events and according to the coach. Lussier has found a way to handle the situational as well as the personal and the pressure.
He said that Lussier learnt to handle his constant demand of wanting to perform the best.
Murphy congratulated Lussier on his accomplishment and said that displaying a round like that on such a tough course is a success he can be proud of.
After Lussier carding a 73 for The Panthers, Cody Pennypacker scored a 87 at the last round of the South Shore sectional individual championship and Connor Dupont along with Ethan Huntley both carded an 88 at the event.
Lussier played his front nine on the course with a 38 where he was very aptly trailing Gould, who had carded a 35. The high school athlete was also seen trailing Jonathan Cooper, who carded a 37.
Lussier shot a 38 on the front nine to trail Gould with a 35 and Bristol-Plymouth's Jonathan Cooper, who had carded a 37. However, the back nine for Lussier had been much better. He scored a remarkable match-low of 35 to grab the win.
Coming to the overall Holliston team performance, the team has been the three time defending champion and a onetime runner up from last year. The team known as the Panthers ended the tournament after standing at the 6th place and has won out of
14 teams competing with collecting a 336 at the last round of the event.
The third place was achieved by team Medfield that collected a score of 325 after the last round. The team has thus qualified for the states. Team Marian finished at the twelfth place, which was led by the golfer Joseph Cassidy. The leader carded an 88 while
other players like Alex Buxbaum, Kevin Dautel and Joseph Collins finished their game after collecting a score of 94 and 96 at the last round.
With Jason Lussier winning the tournament and David Swanson appearing as the runner up, Mike Mulrey and Brett Thomas stood on the leader board behind the leaders with an 81 while Mike DiFiore and Cal Given followed the earlier stated with a score of 88.
The Holliston coach considers Medfield as an exceptionally deep team and said that they have been performing remarkably well.
The three best teams along with 9 individuals of the event will now head off to the Division 3 state championship, which will be held on the 25th of October. The event at Beverly Country Club will also host Pembroke, who won the sectional with
a 318, and Foxboro, who came in second place after a 322.
