  1. Read a lot. You'll come across a wide variety of vocabulary and as you learn what the words mean you'll be able to use them in conversation easily. Avoid slang words (like y'all or cuz) and never use profanity - it will make you sound low class right away. Also, work on your spelling and grammar. It may sound silly, but just knowing proper sentence structure will help you sound more coherent and intelligent.

It's also important to remember that a lot of today's communication is done in writing. Spelling and sentence structure are very, very important for this. The worst thing you can do in a resume or an email for work is spell something wrong or use abbreviations like "idk" or "lol." Use these abbreviations for text messages or instant messaging but get in the habit of writing things correctly in email and other writing.

I commend you for your desire to increase your vocabulary and communicate effectively. Good for you!

  2. Learn a new word every day and use it as much as you can in conversation. I know this sounds too simple to be true but it really works. Start with "supercilious".
