  1. should not. people should take care of themselves. plus, who's going to pay for it? taxing the living daylight out of everyone won't be good.

  2. Not.  Once a college education is free and available to ANYONE, then everyone will go.  Do you know what happens then?

Engineering exams that used to require only a bachelor's degree will now require a masters or Ph.D.

There won't be any more 1-year practical nursing classes or 2-year associate degree nursing programs - that 2-year program that used to lead to a career as an RN will now end as a "certified nursing assistant" and no one will be able to take the registered nursing exam without a graduate degree.

Accountants already have to have a bachelor's degree, a master's degree, and 1 year of experience to sit for the CPA exam.  Make college free to anyone, and CPAs will have to have a PhD and several years experience.

In other words - once ANYONE can go, the value of a bachelor's degree will drop to ZERO.  Taxes will go through the roof to pay for it, but salaries will drop because there will be no incentive for colleges NOT to graduate everyone, even if they can't pass (gee ... just like primary and secondary public schools which are free and available to anyone).

Fact is, not every career needs college-level preparation.  In fact, we already have a LOT of companies requiring college degrees for jobs that should be getting filled by high school or community college grads.  One of my cousins quit college when the restaurant where he was a waiter offered him a job as assistant manager.  Within 20 years, he was CEO, and he never finished college.

Not every person needs college.  Not every career calls for it.  Don't cheapen it by giving it away.

  3. It's free in most European countries, but it's certainly not open to everyone - you have to qualify to get in, and that's pretty hard.  They spend about half their salaries in taxes to pay for the free education, and most students are separated into 'college bound' and 'not a chance in h**l' by age 13.  In the US, we might pay a lot more for our own chances at education, but any idiot can take a stab at college if they want to (community colleges, junior colleges, some private for-profit, some state universities).

So for free education for everyone, trying calculating how much we'd have to pay in taxes - and do you really want to pay for someone taking their third attempt at passing basic college algebra?

  4. Not. How the h**l would these free colleges operate? completely on tax payers salary? I mean people can't put up the $15 per unit at community college? How much is state school? Higher education is available to all citizens, and affordable for all citizens. The only people who can't afford it are those who do not apply themselves or have enough motivation to earn the money. I joined the military to pay for my education. There is always a way, and having free colleges would just provide welfare moochers another opportunity to cheat their fellow citizens.
