Highest ever Xbox sales recorded in the previous week, Black Friday the reason
Microsoft have plenty to be jolly about before the holiday season as the company saw a week of record sales for its console in the United States.
According to the latest reports 960,000 Xbox 360 consoles made their way off of store shelves and into homes in the previous week. That is the highest weekly figure ever to be recorded by the company.
The next part of the statement offered some explanation as to how the Xbox 360 managed such astronomical sales figures. The reasons can be narrowed down to the special offers and discounts which were offered by retail outlets throughout the country on the
occasion of Black Friday.
For all those who are unfamiliar with the western practice of Black Friday, it is basically when the retailers and outlets reduce their prices by insane amounts, sometimes up to 75% or more on Friday for 24 hours in the hopes of boosting sales.
A number of consumer stand in line for the midnight openings and rush to get their hands on the discounted goods. In the process nearly a million Xbox 360s were sold this year on the occasion.
Even more impressively out of the total sales figure 800,000 units were sold on Black Friday alone, with the remaining 160,000 being sold during the rest of the week.
Microsoft had plenty to cheer about with their Kinect sales as well as the motion control peripheral also managed to sell a towering 750,000 units. However, it must be mentioned that the figure includes both individual console sales as well as bundle offers.
On the other hand Nintendo were satisfied with their sales figures as well, as they managed to sell half-a-million Nintendo Wii units in the same time period. What is impressive is that the Wii was the first console of the current generation and it still
managed to sell quite a bit.
Not only that but the video game sales for the two of Nintendo’s biggest titles also managed to sell in large amounts. Both Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS and Zelda: Skyward Sword sold 500,000 units each to make Nintendo a very, very happy company
for the time being.
According to Chris Homeister, the boss of Best Buy’s Home Entertainment division, the special offers made the difference in a record breaking week. He said, “We have seen tremendous excitement from customers for our hot holiday gaming offers.”
It would be difficult to argue against him after taking a look at the sales figures especially after a week like the previous one.
However, many gamers will wonder if this was perhaps the last Black Friday that they will spend their money on the current generation of consoles, seeing how the next generation is rumoured to be due out next year.
