Question:

Highest paying jobs with an Anthropology degree?

A girl I met the other day in class is majoring in Anthropology. She loves everything about it, but she's constantly worried about what to do after college. She's really concerned with the salary. She asked me for advice but I could give her none, and now I feel a bit depressed about it. She looked so sad...

Anyway, I would like to know what some of the high paying jobs are as well as the most fulfilling jobs are out there with a degree in Anthropology (whether it be a B.S, MA, PhD, MD, whatever!). I would like to know this so I can maybe give her some kind of hope.

If someone could make an accurate list, I will give you the best answer.

  1. Unfortunately, jobs in anthropology do not pay well and competition is fierce for those that are available. However, the great thing about an anthropology degree is that it is applicable in other fields such as business. Staying within the field (As in teaching or CRM) your friend's top salary is probably going to be at the most about $40,000 while outside she could make $60,000 or $70,000

  2. I loved my anthro classes too.  I would suggest taking another major along with anthro or a maybe a minor.

If she is artitistically inclined or into events she might want to try making a living writing either as a journalist or a writer of books.  Anthro comes in mighty handy there.  If she's interesting in politics she might want to take some Poli sci and get into local or national politics.  Good money there.  Or if shelikes travel and bieng outdoors, she might want to get into Archiology or geology and get a PHD and do research on grants.  These guys can make the bucks digging up the past.

If she really loves the study and gets absorbed by it and wants to learn more and more - she could get her Phd and do research and teach what she discovers.  Professors do alright and have a great lifestyle.

If she really is into money - get her Phd in economics and advise big investment houses.  Dreary work (In my opinion but not others) but it pays waaaay good - she is good.  If she isn't - good luck.

In any case she's going to have to blend and create her career based on her love and her needs.

  3. There are basically two ways to make money with anthropology:

You can write books about social norms. Sometimes they become best-sellers (e.g. Alvin Toffler's book, "Future Shock").

Or, you can  use your expertise in social evolution and social customs to help major corporations market their product ilnes in different communities and countries.

  4. Why Not Go with Work for The Central Intelligence Agency they need people that understand differences between Nations and Peoples. That is what Anthropology is all about.

  5. Typically, competition is fierce for jobs as professors in anthropology.  However, high paying jobs in public policy and public heath seem to attract anthropologists due to the approaches used in anthropology and the anthropologist's ability to see the "big picture" in human cultures and societies.
