Highlights from Round 3 of Crowne Plaza Invitational – Part1
The $6.2-million Crowne Plaza Invitational has stepped into the final round with Charlie Wi in the lead. The Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour’s event, carrying a winner’s share of $1.116 million and 500 FedEx points, is taking place at the par-70
Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
Wi took charge of the field after battling windy conditions. He teed off from the front in the morning and taking advantage of the north wind, fired five birdies that helped him trespass David Toms.
When asked to comment on the weather conditions and his game, Wi said, “I think the conditions were the same as it was on Thursday and Friday. I know it rained a lot yesterday. The course dried out well. The balls were still rolling on the fairways. And
the greens were quite receptive, but they were have receptive before it rained. So the course really hadn't changed that much.”
David Toms, who had the lead locked in his golf bag until Saturday, could not cater to the requirements laid by the wet greens. The runner-up of Players Championship teed-off from the front in lead with a score of 16-under par and became the target of the
‘bogeyman’. Toms birdied the opening hole for the third time in the tournament and walked past the fairway bunker on the second hole to make his attempt on the sloped green, but to his despise, the shot missed the target and he had to settle for a bogey.
Similar action was seen on the next hole and on the par-4 sixth, where Toms kept on missing the fairway through his errant drives, and signed for bogeys.
No change was seen on the back, where the pin placement was crucial. The 44-year-old Louisianan picked up a birdie on the 11th hole, but soon became the target of inaccuracy. He signed for one double bogey, one bogey and wrapped the day with a
score beyond the realms of par, carding a 74.
In addition to that, Toms relished a success rate of 44 percent in Green Hits in Regulation and 57 percent in driving accuracy. Meanwhile, he secured the top spot in putting stats, in which he had an average of 1.75.
On approaching the clubhouse Toms said, “It's perfect. It's a tough day overall. You know, I told myself just get off to a good start, get out there, and get my nerves in check. You know, for me it will just be you know, I'm right where I set out to be when
I started this week. Certainly I would love to be sitting here with a 10 shot lead and trying to break some record or something like that.”
