Highlights from first round of Golf Castello Masters
Sergio Garcia failed to set a mark in the first round of the Castello Masters, whereas, Paul Lawrie and Ricardo Gonzalez took the clubhouse lead by picking up seven birdies.
The first round of the Castello Masters kicked off at the Club de Campo del Mediterraneo in Spain on 21st of October, 2010. The field demonstrated moderate results with two players in the lead. The Scottish professional golfer smashed a score
of 64 in the first round to share the lead with the South American, Ricardo Gonzalez. The duo was chased by David Horsey who hails from England. The 25-year-old was one stroke behind the leaders.
Horsey who turned professional in 2007 was one-under after the front nine, but on his way to the closing holes the Englishman fired five more birdies to take the second position on the leader board. The golfer was followed by a group of four players at five-under-par;
Simon Khan, Richard Finch, Gary Orr and Jean-Baptiste Gonnet.
The Englishman, Khan picked up two birdies in the front nine, but missed a shot on the ninth to close the half round with a level par. However, to make his way up on the leader board, he smashed four birdies in the five closing holes to take the fourth place.
Like Simon Khan, Gary Orr too had to struggle on the front nine, but he made an impressive come back in the back nine. The 6 feet 2 inches tall golfer carded four-under by the end of the 18th hole. He sandwiched an eagle in two birdies on the par-5-13th.
On the other hand, another Englishman made four birdies, one bogey and one eagle to wrap the round at a 66. Jean-Baptiste Gonnet who hails from France carded 66 with the help of birdies in a bogey-free round. He was the third player on the field to deliver
a spot less round.
Next on the leader board were six players at four-under-par namely Richard Bland, David Drysdale, Michael Hoey, Gregory Bourdy, Jeppe Huldahl and Robert-Jan Derksen.
Bland and Drysdale both had magnificent rounds featuring seven birdies and three bogeys, while Huey carded six birdies and two bogeys.
Jose Maria Olazabal took the 88th spot of the leader board with a score of two-over-par, whereas, his compatriot equalled the round with a very poor performance. Ironically, the Spaniard gave putting lessons to Ricardo Gonzalez in the pro-am session
on Wednesday who later on surged to lead, whereas, Olazabal kept on struggling with his putter.
Gonzalez told this to the press.  He said, “On practice day Jose Maria gave me a little bit of advice about my putting stroke. He told me I needed to alter my posture and at first what he said was very uncomfortable. But today as the ball started to drop
into the hole that discomfort started to disappear."
This was one side of the picture; on the other hand the player whose father had been playing in the clubhouse of Campo del Mediterraneo suffered a severe setback. Sergio Garcia failed to find the fairways and resultantly could not reach the greens. The scenario
seemed like the first day of the Ryder Cup, when the Americans looked confused due to the weather and the par.
Unlike the weather there, conditions were presentable on the par-7307 course. It was sunny and no wind blew making it very easy for the long hitters to reach the green in two.
Lawrie and Gonzalez hit high on the first round of Castello Masters, whereas, Garcia struggled with the putter all the time.
