Highlights from first round of Masters- Part 1
The first round of the 75th Masters concluded with Rory Mcllroy and Alvaro Quiros in the lead. The $7.5 million major championship is taking place at the par-72 Augusta National. Here is a quick recap of the first day.
Mcllroy and Quiros smashed the lowest score of the day, while the rest of the field waited for the greens to become softer by the day end. The two Europeans compiled a score of 7-under par, with a superb scorecard contributed by Mcllroy, who reeled seven
birdies without dropping a shot.
The Northern Irishman putted from 10 feet of the green on five of the holes and still managed to earn birdies.
When asked to compare the performance with that in the opening round of the Open Championship, in which he compiled a 63, Mcllroy replied, “It wasn't maybe as exclusive or spectacular as the 63 at St. Andrews. But it was very solid from start to finish”.
Meanwhile, Quiros reeled eight birdies on a loss of one hole. The Spaniard drove the 14th tee shot into the trees, instead of the fairway. The player walked towards the trees and hit an iron to rescue the ball out of the shrubs.
The ball finally found the fairway en route to a beautiful comeback shot and rolled into the cup for a bogey.
The Spaniard seemed satisfied with his game, as he talked to the press. He said that he hit good shots all day long and he was looking forward to a similar game in the coming days.
Two strokes behind him stood Korean duo, Y.E Yang, and, K.J.Choi. The Koreans replicated the scores on the first day and took the third place on the leader board. Yang, who won the 2009 PGA Championship teed off from the front and anchored four birdies at
the start, which helped him cross half of the leader board.
He dropped a shot on the par-4 11th, but soon countered it off with a glorious eagle on the 13th. He netted two more birdies on the preceding holes and shot into the lead tied with the leaders.
However, not for long, as Yang bogeyed two consecutive holes on the back nine, which snatched the lead away from him. He slipped down the leader board and joined his compatriot Choi at the third spot. Choi gave an equally brilliant performance, especially
on the back, where he reeled five birdies after meeting a bogeyman on the opening hole.
Choi was pleased with his game. He spoke to the press after the first round and said, “I think the bogey on the 11th hole. It was a good shot - I hit a good shot but ended up in the left rough and I made a bogey on that hole. I think that was like medicine
for me; if I had saved par, I probably would have been too excited and maybe lose my rhythm”.
This is it for the first half of the recap. To find out what happened next, stay tuned to bettor.com
