Highlights from the final round of BMW International Open – Part 1
BMW International Open wrapped up on Sunday at the par-72 Golfclub München Eichenried in Munich, Germany with Pablo Larrazabal in the lead. Here is a quick recap for the final round of the European Tour event.
The final round of the tournament saw two Spaniards fighting it out for the title. Sergio Garcia, who had been out of form since the start of the season, teed-off from the front and set the course on fire with four birdies and one eagle. The consecutive
attacks on the pin shot the player straight into lead. Utilizing the same momentum, the veteran marched onto the back and aced the par-5, 11th hole boost his chances of a high finish.
However, fate turned against the player on the back, as he dropped four back-to-back shots towards the end to give away the edge. Garcia then proceeded towards the 18th tee box and birdied it for the fourth time in the tournament. This crucial
shot helped the veteran push the 72-hole session into a playoff match.
On the other hand, Larrazabal reeled five birdies against two bogeys to join his hero in the playoff match, which took place on the 12th, 17th and the 18th hole. The duo birdied the 18th hole twice, and proceeded
towards the 12th and left it for a par. Similar action was seen at the 17th hole, which compelled the players to walk towards the 18th tee for the fourth time in the day.
Garcia, who has not missed a major title since the 1999 Open Championship, drove a magnificent tee-shot towards the fairway to approach the green from the edge of the bunker, which sat on the right side. Hitting a 3-wood towards the heart-shaped green, Garcia
attempted a birdie putt, but the ball missed the cup, leaving him at par. Whereas, Larrazabal approached the green by drawing a shot towards the right side of the green and settled for a birdie.
The winner raised his arms in the air, celebrating his victory, and fell into his caddie’s tight embrace to hide his tears of joy.
When asked to comment on the moment, Larrazabal said, “Beating one of my heroes when I was growing up is just a dream - very emotional.”
Meanwhile, Garcia congratulated his opponent in front of the press and said, “I think the play-off was awesome. We were hitting good shot after good shot; I just wanted to make that putt so badly. But you know, I think that the up and down on 17 and the
birdie on 18 really meant a lot to get myself into the play-off.”
