Highlights from the final round of Crowne Plaza Invitational – Part1
Crowne Plaza Invitational wrapped up on Sunday with David Toms in the lead. The tournament, which was carrying a purse of $6.2 million and 500 FedEx points, took place at the par-70 Colonial Country Club. Here is a quick recap for the final round.
Toms compiled a score of 13-under par in the four-day session to take a one-stroke lead over Charlie Wi. The 44-year-old reeled two birdies and one eagle against a bogey to win a PGA Tour event after a gap of five years.
He was followed by Wi, who led the field in the third round. The runner-up failed to revoke the Saturday-magic and faltered badly after teeing off from the back. The South Korean sandwiched a birdie on the 11th hole between two bogeys. The slow
start broke his momentum and the veteran approached the next five holes with a wayward strategy.
At one moment, when he stood at the 15thfairway, Wi chose to hit a wedge, when the wind required a much assessed club selection. Owing to the carelessness, the player lost the chance to catch an easy birdie that might have served the chance to
force the tournament into a play-off.
However, Wi caught a birdie on the immediate hole and wrapped the back nine at 1-under par. He stepped onto the front with his caddie and fired two birdies on the opening holes. The crowd jittered the venue with applause, but stopped when Wi dropped two
shots on his way towards the end. He capped the day, one stroke shy of the winner.
Despite the second-place finish, the Korean was pleased with his accomplishment. He said, “It's great to finish second on the PGA TOUR any time. But at the same time it's a little bittersweet. I had a 3 shot lead after the first two holes, and I thought
I had a pretty good handle on myself in control.”
He also congratulated Toms over his superb play and said that he deserved it, “David hit some great iron shots coming down the stretch. There were some really tough pins. He was very precise. I certainly didn't give it to him. He definitely earned it.”
The runner-up also shed light on the crowd that supported the winner throughout the day. He said their cheers became a source of motivation for Toms and a setback for him.
Bo Van Pelt occupied the third place on the leader board after composing an aggregate of 10-under par in the 72-hole session. The American pro was one of the two players who jotted the lowest score of the day. He carded 65 with the help of five birdies,
one eagle and two bogeys.
