Highlights from the final round of Players Championship – Part 4
World number four Phil Mickelson occupied the 33rd spot alongside world number five Graeme McDowell. The American, who won the Shell Houston Open on the PGA tour, teed-off from the front and dropped two shots at the start, which broke his momentum. Looking at his falling accuracy, Mickelson decided to play safe, thereby; he stopped attacking the pin and sealed the front at a score of 2-over par.
On his way to the back, the player netted three birdies against one bogey, which helped him finish at par.
Despite failing to perform to his fullest, Mickelson said he was satisfied with his finish. He said while speaking to reporters, “Well, yeah, it would most likely be the back. I really had a good round going, and I just didn't finish it off.”
Meanwhile, McDowell, who posed a powerful threat for the winner in the start of the tournament, became target of stress by the end of the Sunday. He started the Sunday at 4 am, when he stepped on the back nine to complete the round, which he left incomplete because of the rain. After facing the faster greens and double bogeying the 18th, the player lost his cool, which eventually reflected on his scorecard.
He teed off from the front and destroyed his scorecard with three bogeys, which left him with a score of 2-over par. The loss was not huge and could have been eradicated, but the Northern Irishman could not turn tables in his favour. Instead, he double-bogeyed the 17th and dropped three more strokes, which left him standing in the lowest most section of the leaderboard.
McDowell later summarized his performance in front of reporters, “Today was you know I didn't even swing it my best this morning, to be honest, but I hung tough this morning. So it's just one of those days. Everything I tried just went wrong. I just made a few sour looking swings coming in there.”
Despite the poor play, the three-time winner in 2010 finished fourth in green hits in regulation, courtesy of his superb accuracy in the start of the competition.
PGA’s longest hitter, Bubba Watson shared the 45th spot with 2010 Ryder Cup striker Corey Pavin, Ben Crane, Justin Rose and Garrett Willis.
The highest score was composed by three players; namely Lucas Glover, Keegan Bradley and Mark O’Meara. The winner of Wells Fargo Championship, Glover, who was the strongest player in last week’s field, double-bogeyed and bogeyed two holes each. Meanwhile, Champions Tour star, O’Meara bogeyed six holes and double bogeyed one.
