Highlights from the final round of Players Championship – Part2
Luke Donald, who won the Accenture Match Play Championship in the start of the season, teed-off from the front and sealed it at par, after dropping two shots against two birdies. The Englishman could not cope with the challenging conditions and failed to
make-up for the early loss. He missed a par-putt at the par-4 14th against two birdies and sealed the day at 1-under par.
A six-way tie was seen at the sixth spot on the leaderboard, which included Jason Day, Hunter Mahan, J.B Holmes, Alvaro Quiros, Aaron Baddeley and Jason Dufner. The lowest score out of the group of six was produced by Day, who teed off from the front and
compiled a colourful scorecard. The player double-bogeyed the third hole on the front, dropped two more shots, but recovered them via a number of birdies he reeled in the later holes. He carded one eagle and six birdies with the help of an excellent short
game.
Meanwhile, Mahan tried to counter the loss from the third round in which he carved three bogeys and one double-bogey. The 2010 Ryder Cup star par-equaled the back and reeled three birdies in the front, which helped him in finishing at 69.
Sergio Garcia, Steve Stricker and Spencer Levin produced a score of 8-under par to share the 12th spot with five other players. The lowest score of the day was produced by Garcia, who posted a 65 with the help of six birdies and one eagle. The
Spaniard noticed pace at the last minute, but it helped him work his way up.
When asked the reason behind the sudden change, he replied, “I’m definitely hitting the ball better. Every aspect of my game has been improving. I think my chipping is obviously better; my putting is a little more consistent. But mainly just doing what I
want to do at home, enjoying my things at home, and that's making when I come to a tournament, it makes me enjoy it even more.”
Sean O’Hair, Stewart Cink and Martin Kaymer occupied the 19th spot after producing scores in 70s. Kaymer, who held the second spot on Official World Golf Rankings before the start of the tournament, fell to the third place, owing to his negligence.
The German picked five birdies against five bogeys to finish at par. He faltered in driving distance and accuracy, but kept his reigns tight on the short game. Kaymer finished third in putting stats with an average of 1.6, which meant that he completed a hole
in more than one putts.
