Highlights from the final round of The Open Championship – Part 3
Raphael Jacquelin was the only Frenchman in the entire field to occupy a spot amongst the top eight. The player improved a lot by the end of the four-day event, the proof of which was the difference between his opening-round and final-round scores. The player
carded four bogeys in the first round without a single birdie, whereas, he wrapped the tournament with four birdies and three bogeys.
A three-way tie was seen for the ninth spot on the leaderboard, which included Spain’s Sergio Garcia, England’s Simon Dyson and United States’ Davis Love III.
Garcia showed a huge amount of improvement in the final round. He jumped up 16 spots by the end of the day, which proved that he had the ability to play under pressure. The Spaniard started the day in superb colours, and rendered his first half of the scorecard
in shades of blue – blue denotes a birdie in golf. Garcia birdied four holes and wrapped the front nine with a score of two-under-par. He clamped two more birdies on the back and sealed the day with the course lowest, 68.
When asked to sum up the day, Garcia said, “Yeah, good day, very tough conditions, but yeah, no, it was a good, solid day. I started really, really well, made a couple great putts early on. Unfortunately, had a little hiccup on 8, but played nicely after
that, had some good opportunities. Unfortunately, they didn't drop, but a good finish, and I can't be disappointed with it.”
Meanwhile, Simon Dyson produced an average round by carding a 70 after dropping four shots in the day. The Britt delivered an amazing chip at the par-5 seventh which plunged the green and rolled into the cup amidst a huge cheer from the crowd. He followed
it with two more birdies and wrapped the day at par.
A performance quite similar to that of Dyson’s was that of Davis Love III. Love revised his game-plan after strong winds started blowing across the course, however, he didn’t find much success in posting a low score. The American teed off from the front
and dropped three shots against two birdies, crossing the realms of par.
The story was almost the same at the back nine. Love saved par on eight holes and missed a par-putt on the fifteenth hole, not carding a single birdie. As a result, the player dropped from the seventh to ninth spot on the leaderboard. Love banked in on €115,873
worth of prize money nonetheless.
