Highlights from the final round of The Open Championship – Part 5
George Coetzee started the day in seventh spot, but fell eight spots below after carding a score of four-over-par in the final round. The South African produced the worst score of the tournament after failing to sustain the pressure.
The winner of Telkom PGA Championship, Coetzee teed off from the front and bogeyed three of the opening six holes, which eventually broke his momentum. The player tried to undo the affect of the early loss with the help of a superb tee shot on the par-5,
seventh but could not change much of the scorecard after his horrible start. He wrapped the first half with a score of two-over-par.
However, the worst was yet to come for the player, and he might have seen it coming. The first shock arrived at the par-4 10th, when Coetzee drove the tee shot into a fairway bunker and had to use two strokes to retrieve the ball.
Another disaster waited at the par-3 16th hole, where Coetzee missed the green and the ball ducked into the long grass on the left. The player hit a wedge to direct the ball to the green, but the ball rolled onto the right and eventually resulted
in a double-bogey.
Unable to control the ball on a windy Sunday, the player sealed the day with a score of 74.
Richard Green, Charl Schwartzel, Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson, Y.E. Yang and Fredrik Jacobson occupied the 16th spot on the leaderboard after compiling a score of five-over-par.
The lowest score of the group was composed by Green, who birdied two, aced one and bogeyed five holes. The Aussie could not counter the long pars of the Royal St George’s Golf Club and ultimately suffered after failing to save pars on most of the holes.
Despite that, he delivered some brilliant tee shots that marveled the crowd.
Meanwhile, the highest score was composed by Johnson, who was part of the Ryder Cup squad in 2010. The American produced the worst round of the four-day tournament, compelling the commentators to advise him to work on his short game.
Johnson could not tackle the par-3 holes of the course that demanded a careful club selection and hence, proved as a failure on the windy course. He wrapped the day with two birdies and six bogeys.
