Highlights from the final round of Wells Fargo Championship – Part 1
The $6.5-million Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship ended on Sunday, with Lucas Glover coming out on top of the field. The tournament took place at the par-72 Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. Here is a quick recap for the
event.
Glover lifted his third title on the PGA circuit. He teed off from the front and reeled four birdies alongside one eagle to force the tournament into a play-off hole. The American ended the play-off in a sudden death after he rolled a 4-feet-ong putt for
par.
The 31-year-old local took a one-stroke lead over Jonathan Byrd, who lost the tournament after he saw his birdie attempt changed into a bogey.
The duo was chased by Rory Sabbatini, who won the Honda Classic in March. The South African produced the lowest score of the day, besides compiling a flawless scorecard. He teed off from the front and birdied the opening hole from a distance of 10 feet.
The early accomplishment set the player into a thrilling pace, which helped him reel two more on the front. The player sealed the front with a score of 3-under-par 33, which was more than the average field.
On his way to the back, the 35-year-old stopped for a quick snack. The South African then marched towards the tenth tee and hammered a 3-yard long drive, which covered half of the fairway. The crowd cheered for Sabbatini as he and his caddie hurried towards
the fairway bunker, which stood behind the ball. With a 3-iron clutched in his hand, Sabbatini hammered a shot that hit the Green in Regulation, making space for a birdie. Without much pondering, the player rolled a birdie and celebrated the shot sharing a
hug with his caddie.
He left next three holes for par, but settled the score in the upcoming holes, when he fired three back-to-back birdies starting from the 14th. He wrapped the day with a score of 65 and jumped from the 13th place to the third. The superb
finish exempted the South African from the Players Championship, which is the next event on the PGA circuit.
When asked how he felt over making an entry into the Players Championship, Sabbatini said, “You know I was actually extremely excited about my game this week. It is just getting that feeling. So going into next week I can take a lot of confidence going in
that I'm hitting the ball well, I'm doing all the little things well out there, and that's the goal is to try and improve that consistency. So that is starting to take form.”
He was chased by Bill Haas, who signed for a score of 13-under par. Haas started the tournament with a 64 and wrapped it with a 70.
