Highlights from the final round of the Memorial tournament – Part 3
Dustin Johnson occupied the fourth spot on the leaderboard with the help of a 65. The American was one of the players who produced the course lowest despite facing the pressure of the final round.
The winner of BMW Championship, Johnson chose to tee-off from the front and clamped four birdies against one bogey. He compiled a score of 3-under par 33 in the front and proceeded towards the back to reel four more birdies. The player’s thirst for the birdies
compelled him to finish second in birdie count.
Apart from reeling a huge number of birdies, Johnson demonstrated sheer amount of control over his driver, which ultimately reflected in the accuracy stats that hovered on the 86 percent mark. Nonetheless, he relished a success rate of 89 percent in Green
Hits in Regulation and an average of 1.680 in putting stats.
When asked to comment on his game, Johnson said, “Yeah, for sure. I've been struggling a little bit all year. Just haven't really been that consistent. I've had some good weeks and had some really bad weeks. You know, I finally feel like the game last week
I played fairly well, and this week really the game turned around. I'm starting to hit a lot of good golf shots, driving it in the fairway and holing some putts. You know, I'm definitely excited about going into the U.S. Open.”
Five strokes behind the winner Steve Stricker, sat Rory McIlroy. Once again, the rookie kicked off in leader’s shoes, but could not finish in winner’s place. The Northern Irishman produced 66-72-71-68 in the four-day series. On Sunday, he teed-off from the
front, fired four back-to-back birdies starting from the par-5 fifth and wrapped it with a score of 4-under par.
The start was superb for McIlroy, but he could not continue it until the last hole and dropped three shots on his way to the closing. He birdied three holes to counter off the loss and managed to seal the back at par, which helped him in finishing in the
top five. The world number seven kicked off while facing problems in driving accuracy, but fixed them by the end of the tournament with an average of 73.2 percent.
On his way to the clubhouse, McIlroy shed light on his overall experience. He said that he was pleased with his game, as he kept a balance in the short and the long game. Moreover, he talked about his preparations for the U.S. Open, which is about to hit
the tour in a few weeks. He said that he was positive about his performance and was looking forward to give his best in it.
