Highlights from the final round of the Open Championship – Part 2
Thomas Bjorn compiled an aggregate of one-under-par to occupy the fourth spot on the leaderboard. The Dane once again failed to emulate his opening-round performance and wrapped the tournament with a score beyond par.
Bjorn teed off from the front and picked two birdies against one bogey to stabilize the aggregate somewhat. His next birdie dragged the score back into the realms of par, but before things could get back to normal, wind took its toll and twice drifted Bjorn’s
tee shot into hazards. This ultimately left the player with a score of one-over-par.
A three-way tie was seen for the fifth spot on the leader board, which included Rickie Fowler, Anthony Kim and Chad Campbell.
Campbell, who is a former Ryder Cup player, managed to surge eight spots after starting the day at the 13th spot. The Texan reeled five birdies against four bogeys to compile a score of 69, which gave him a chance to cash in on €201,759 worth
of prize money.
Commenting on the weather conditions, Campbell said he was comfortable with the weather, as it reminded him of home, “A bit like home? Yeah, it is. In West Texas, we get a lot of wind.”
Meanwhile, Anthony Kim stepped into the final round tied for the seventh spot, but made his way up by the end of the day after carding three birdies and three bogeys. The player suffered in short game, which was affected by the strong winds blowing in the
afternoon. Despite that, he balanced it out with his driving accuracy, which helped him find seventy percent of the fairways.
One pro who came tumbling down the leaderboard by the end of the day was Fowler, who tried to play safe and could not earn a single point. Dressed in orange, the rookie gave the worst performance of the four-day event in this one round. He teed off from
the front and capped it at par after meeting failure to earn a single birdie. In order to target a few birdies, the American tried to attack the pin in the second half and instead, earned himself two bogeys, dragging his score even lower.
However, despite his terrible performance in the final round, the rookie, surprisingly, was satisfied with the results, “I got off to a good start, actually, and had a couple looks at birdie, middle of my round, and really couldn't get them to go and made
a couple bogeys late that obviously hurt my chances there. All in all, awesome tournament, had a lot of fun, love playing over here, and had a good time with Thomas today.”
Fowler banked on €201,759 worth of prize money with his 5th place finish and is likely to jump up a few places in the Official World Golf Rankings by the end of the next week.
