Highlights from the final round of the Saint-Omer Open – Part1
Matthew Zions fired a round of two-under-par, 69 in the last session of the Saint-Omer Open to win the €100,000 European Tour event, which was presented by Neuflize OBC. The tournament took place at the par-71 Aa Saint Omer Golf Club in Lumbres, France.
Here is a quick recap of the final day.
Zions teed-off from the front and clawed four birdies in the day to earn an exemption on the European Tour until 2012. The Aussie managed to keep his score in the realms of par and was one of the six players to card a round in 60s.
“It feels like I’m dreaming,” said Zions while commenting about his win. “The last four holes I was wondering when I could start thinking about winning, and when would be too soon that it tempted fate. I had a lump in my throat a couple of times.”
Daniel Denison of England, Peter Gustafsson of Sweden and Craig Lee of Scotland posted an aggregate of one-under par to occupy the second place on the leaderboard. Gustafsson was the only player out of the trio to compose a score in par. He carded seven
birdies in the day to earn that score.
A seven-way tie was seen at the fifth spot on the leaderboard, which included Jorge Campillo, Lorenzo Gagli, Anders Schmidt Hansen, Andrea Perrino, Marco Ruiz, Lee Slattery and Andrew Tampion.
Ruiz was one of the four players in the entire field to post an eagle on the rain-wrecked course. He aced the par-5 seventh hole with a superb tee shot that flew 200 yards and made room for a solid iron play.
South African ace George Coetzee, who led the field in the first round, could not emulate his early performance and surrendered at the hands of poor weather conditions. He bogeyed six holes, double bogeyed one and birdied four holes to post a score of four-over
par 75.
The player left the course dejected, without addressing the press, who were eager to know what happened out there.
However, before stepping into Sunday, the 24-year-old Coetzee said, “I putted pretty well, that's the reason for my score. It's not easy to get the ball on the green or to keep it there if you do get it on the green. But I played well over the last three
holes and it's a good start.”
He was joined by four more players that included Victor Dubuisson, Jamie Elson, Alastair Forsyth and Espen Kofstad. Forsyth was the only player in the whole field to eagle two holes in the four-day session. However, in the final round, he could not keep
his cool and bogeyed four holes against two birdies that left him standing with a score of 2-over par 73.
