Highlights from the first round of Crowne Plaza Invitational – Part1
The first round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational took place at the par-70 Colonial Country Club with David Toms and Chez Reavie in the lead. Here is a quick look at the results of the first round.
The runner-up of Players Championship, Toms teed off from the front and composed the course lowest with the help of eight birdies. The American relished impressive stats in putting, which helped him finish in the lead. However, he was not satisfied with
the long game, especially driving.
When asked to comment on his game, Toms said, “I didn't drive the ball that well today. One thing that you can look at is, you could play conservative golf, and you can hit irons or hybrids off the tee, you get the ball in the fairway pretty easily, because
if you lay back, they don't pinch in.”
Meanwhile, Reavie raved a similar score en route to the highest finish of the day.
The duo was chased by 2010 Rookie of the Year, Rickie Fowler. The American teed-off from the back and birdied two holes against a lonesome bogey. This left him 1-under par after the first nine holes, but this was only the start, as a birdie fiesta hit the
greens on the front, when Fowler decided to take charge.
Fowler aced the opening hole on the front, which left him stocked with loads of confidence. Using the motivation from the crowd, the 22-year-old pro fired three back-to-back birdies starting from the par-4 second. The crowd clapped louder and enjoying the
sound of applause, the player decided to emulate similar action with a gap of one green, and so he did. He fired another set of triplets before double bogeying the closing hole on the front.
Fowler wrapped the day with a score of 63 and secured the third place on the leaderboard.
While talking to the press, Fowler said that he intended to post a 59, but could not achieve the target owing to his poor driving accuracy.
He said while speaking to reporters, “I had 60, 59. But like I said, I was trying to hit it behind the hole to give myself a look. I was playing well, putting well. I am playing well right now. I came off last week sick. I started to feel well on Friday
and did the same thing at TPC. I brought some momentum this week. Finally turned things on at the end.”
A five-way tie was seen at the fourth spot of the leaderboard, which includes Charlie Wi from South Korea, Nathan Green from Australia, Brendon de Jonge from South Africa, Stewart Cink and Brian g*y from America.
Wi posted seven birdies on a loss of one hole, while Green carded six without a blemish. g*y netted seven against a single bogey and so did Cink.
