Highlights from the first round of Heritage Tournament - Part1
The first round of the $5.7 million-purse Heritage Tournament wrapped up with Garrett Willis in the lead. Here is a quick recap for the Professional Golfers Association (PGA) Tour event, which is taking place at the Harbour Town
Golf Links in Hilton Head.
Willis fired six birdies in a row at the front starting from the par-5 second and capped the day with three more at the back. The 37-year-old topped the stats in sand saves and remained the number two in green hits in regulation
until the end of the day.
He owed his superb game to his Old Faithful putter, which is a prototype of Scotty Cameron. He said, “So I carried my own bag to the range while my caddie went to get the putter. Hit balls on the range, and hit like three or four
putts with my Old Faithful putter, and hit a pretty good shot in there for about ten feet and missed it and kind of had the negative thoughts of, here we go again, not making any putts.”
Willis was followed by a quartet of players, which included Chad Campbell, Tim Herron, Arjun Atwal and Matt Bettencourt.
Campbell a 36-year-old Texan surprised the spectators with his superb putting. The four-time winner on the tour, who has not won a title since the 2007 Viking Classic, reeled seven birdies in the 18-hole session, out of which four
were in the back.
The Texan was very happy with his game, which pushed him into the top section of the leader board. “I played really well today," Campbell said. "We don't catch this course too often with little or no wind. So it was nice to go
out and take advantage of it. I made a few putts and it was a good start to the week. Today I was able to go out and make a few putts, so it was nice to see.”
Meanwhile, Herron had five birdies in the front and two in the back. Like the rest of the toppers, he teed off from the front, as the greens were softer in the early morning conditions and claimed five birdies to join the leaders.
He marched towards the back with a similar strategy and relished success until the wind picked up pace. He nailed two more birdies against a bogey and wrapped the day with a score of 6-under
Herron, who has won four tournaments in the past, flashed a smile on his way to the clubhouse. When asked how he felt about his achievement in the first round, he replied that he felt his struggle and hard work had begun to pay
off. He also highlighted the fact that there were some trouble areas in his games, but he will not let them hamper his performance in the coming rounds.
To be continued...
