Highlights from the first round of Wells Fargo Championship – Part1
The $6.5-million Wells Fargo Championship has stepped into the second round with Bill Haas in the lead. The Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event is taking place at the par-72 Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.
The 28-year-old native of Charlotte, Haas teed-off from the back and reeled eight birdies without dropping a shot. He relished a success rate of 83 percent in green hits and regulation and took the charge of the field with a two-stroke lead over Jonathan
Byrd and David Toms.
The player was extremely happy over his achievement and said while speaking to reporters, “Yeah, I got off to a nice start.”
Meanwhile, Byrd, who won the Tournament of Champions at the start of the season, chose the back nine as his battleground and reeled three birdies to compose a score of 3-under-par, 33. He marched towards the front and anchored four more against a single
bogey to sign for a grand total of 6-under-par.
When asked how he felt about his game, the 32-year-old South Carolinian said, “I just felt good out there today. I felt calm. I have always enjoyed playing this golf course, but I always have not played well here. I have had one good finish here. Just started
off, had a birdie early, and just kind of kept the momentum, just kept hitting good shots all day.”
Meanwhile, Toms teed-off from the front and had a rather slow start as compared to the rest of the field. He par-equaled the first five holes, birdied the sixth and aced the seventh to take a share in the second place.
The 12-time winner on the PGA circuit shared his sentiments about his game, “I certainly will take 6-under par on a day like today. I hit a lot of woods early into par-4s, which if I can shoot 3-under on the front nine as long as it played, I'll take that
any day.”
Seven players sat on the fourth place with a score of 5-under-par. The list included Rookie of 2010 Rickie Fowler, winner of RBC Canadian Open Carl Pettersson, winner of Greenbrier Classic 2010 Stuart Appleby, Pat Perez, Lucas Glover, Vijay Singh and Brian
Davis.
Fowler, who is one of the betting favourites for the event, had a horrible start, as he bogeyed the two opening holes on the back, but later picked on pace and picked two birdies to counter them off. He sealed the back nine at par, which was a good sign
for the player who had missed the cut in two of the ten events at the start of the new season.
However, on his way to the front, the 22-year-old had a long discussion with his caddie, which proved fruitful at the end of the day. The American birdied the opening hole at the front and carded three more to sign for a score of four-under-par.
