Highlights from the first round of the Barclays Scottish Open – Part 2
Peter Hanson, George Coetzee and Thorbjorn Olesen smashed a score of 6-under par 66 in the first round of the tournament to occupy the third spot on the leaderboard.
Olesen, who hails from Denmark, produced a bogey-free scorecard with the help of six birdies. The player teed-off from the front and picked his birdie on the opening hole, which eventually became the source of his motivation. High on confidence, Olesen birdied three more holes at the back and wrapped the day with a score of 66.
Meanwhile, Coetzee faltered thrice on the front and still managed to earn five birdies, which helped him wrap it with a score of two-under-par, 34. However, on his way to the back nine, the South African decided to play meticulously, which paid off soon, as he capped the day without dropping a shot. Coetzee caught four birdies at the back and managed to produce a 66.
A 13-way tie was seen for the sixth spot on the leaderboard, which included Chris Wood, Barry Lane, Edoardo Molinari, Retief Goosen, Jamie Donaldson, Luke Donald, Colin Montgomerie, Richard Finch, Peter Whiteford, Scott Jamieson, Marc Warren, Richard McEvoy and Carlos Del Moral.
Wood started the day with a superb show. He fired five birdies against a single bogey and marveled the crowd with his superb wedge game. The Englishman clamped two more holes on the back and sealed it with a 67.
Talking to the press, Wood said that he was satisfied with his start, even though the conditions weren’t ideal. The player talked about the weather proving to be a factor and the elevated greens of Castle Stuart.
On the other hand, his compatriot Barry Lane kicked off with a slow start, par-equaling six holes and making only two birdies. His best shot of the round was witnessed at the par-5, 18th hole, where he hit 2-iron on the fairway, which traveled the entire fairway and landed right onto the green. Lane did not stop to take a second opinion, hurried to the green and rolled a putt for an eagle.
Warren also started the day with a huge blow, as he triple bogeyed the opening hole. That mislead the crowd into thinking the player would not be able to card a low number. Warren, however, proved doubters wrong.
The Scott birdied the third hole, marched forward to fire four back-to-back birdies starting from the sixth, and caught another set of three birdies on the back. The brilliant performance shot the player upto the sixth spot on the leaderboard, after his woeful first hole.
