Highlights from the first round of the Memorial tournament – Part 4
A six-way tie was seen for the seventh spot on the leaderboard, which included Jonathan Byrd, Mark Wilson, Webb Simpson, John Senden, Kevin Streelman and Luke Donald.
Byrd, who won Hyundai Tournament of Champions in the start of the season, tried his best but could not relish success in saving par on a wet evening. The 33-year-old American double bogeyed par-3 eighth, from where things started to look ugly. He bogeyed
four more holes towards the end against six birdies and wrapped the day at a score of 1-over par 73.
Despite knowing the course and having his brother on the bag, the player could not take the advantage. He left the course in disappointment, which was the opposite of the statement he gave in the start of the final round.
Byrd said at the start of the final round, “Absolutely. This has been a special week so far, and I had a really good tournament here two years ago. My dad was getting into his last weeks of his life, and I was able to get in contention and have a chance
to win coming down the stretch. So I always have good memories with this tournament, but this week I've got my brother on the bag, and he's done a great job this week, and he's gotten more and more relaxed every day, and we've played some really good golf.
I'm doing everything pretty well.”
Meanwhile, Senden improved considerably as compare to the type of start he took. He signed for a 68 with the help of five birdies and one eagle. In addition to adding an eagle to the scorecard, the Aussie marveled the crowd with his driving accuracy, which
was 93 percent.
The lowest score in the group was made by Streelman, who teed-off from the front. The American reeled five birdies in the front without dropping a single shot and picked two more towards the end to take a spot in top seven.
World number one, Luke Donald could not revoke the charm of a leader. He picked five birdies against one bogey with the help of a strong grip on the driver. The Englishman attained a success rate of 93 percent in driving accuracy, which meant that he missed
only two fairways, after teeing-off. Knowing Muirfield is a course harsh with fairways and tests on length, the veteran stunned the critics with his prowess.
Simpson stepped into the final round in 17th place and wrapped it in seventh, owing to his powerful iron play. The player clawed five birdies against a single bogey to produce a near-flawless scorecard.
