Highlights from the second round of BMW International Open – Part 2
Retief Goosen fired a round of 3-under par 69 in the second round of the tournament to take a place in the ninth spot. The South African teed-off from the front and reeled five birdies against a bogey in the day. The veteran has been facing a problem in
his long game, whereas, his short game has been impressive.
He was joined by five players including, Lloyd Saltman, who posted a score of 66. Saltman marveled the crowd with his birdie fiesta, starting from the front nine. The Scott rolled his first birdie from a distance of eight feet on the par-4 fourth hole. However,
this was only the start, as the player fired a set of four back-to-back birdies starting from the sixth hole and wrapped the front nine with a score of five-under-par 31.
Marching towards the back nine, the player picked two more birdies against a loss of one bogey and sealed the day with a 66.
World number three Martin Kaymer posted a score of four-under-par, 68 to occupy the 15th spot. Kaymer stepped into the tournament, hoping to deliver in front of his home crowd, but hasn’t lived up to the crowd’s, or his own, expectations. The
26-year-old pro opened the round with a score of 70, but after carding five birdies and one bogey, he wrapped it with a 68.
Kaymer is four strokes behind the leaders, which isn’t a huge deficit for a player of his caliber. However, he will have to be accurate in club selection if he wants to end up near his competition, or edge past them.
Defending champion of the event, David Horsey is lurking at the 21st
spot after signing for a score of five-under-par. The Englishman has not been able to emulate last year’s magic since the start of the tournament. Instead, he double-bogeyed the par-4, tenth in the first round and bogeyed two back-to-back holes in the second,
a feat that cost him dearly.
Meanwhile, Italian ace Francesco Molinari, who had been out of form since the start of the tournament, seemed to be having the day of his life. The veteran clawed six birdies in the day without dropping a shot and boosted his chances of a high finish.
King of bunkers, Dustin Johnson picked five birdies against four bogeys to compile a score of one-under-par. Earlier, the veteran had vowed to give a title challenge to the rest of the field, however, with the way things are going for him, Johnson would
be lucky if he makes the cut into the weekend.
