Highlights from the second round of Players Championship – Part1
The second round of the $9.5-million Players Championship has stepped into the third round at the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Here is a quick recap of the second day.
David Toms smashed a score of 4-under 68 in the second round to surge into the lead. The 44-year-old picked six birdies against two bogeys to take a one-stroke lead over first round leader Nick Watney.
Toms later spoke to the press about his game and said, “I haven't done anything great, haven't made a lot of putts, or chip-ins or anything like that. I've just played very, very solid golf. It's all about enjoying the game, enjoying the competition and
if you get the results that is a bonus as well.”
Meanwhile, Watney, who started the round with an edge, could not emulate his first round game. The American birdied only two holes against two bogeys and left the course at par.
A quartet of players sat at the third place on the leaderboard with a score of 8-under par. The group included Graeme McDowell, Steve Stricker, Luke Donald and Lucas Glover. The lowest score of the group was compiled by Stricker and Donald, who settled at
67.
A commendable performance was given by McDowell, who birdied five holes at the back and two in the front. The player was very happy with his revival.
“Yeah, obviously coming off the back of a great run of form for 10 months where it felt like everything was going my way, and the game felt very easy,” said McDowell.
One stroke behind the quartet was Hunter Mahan, who carded a score of 67 with the help of seven birdies.
World number two Martin Kaymer, and Justin Rose shared the 17th spot. The German teed-off from the back and bogeyed two holes, which ultimately broke his pace. On his way to the front though, Kaymer changed his strategy and picked four birdies
against two bogeys that left him with a score at par.
Meanwhile, Rose was superb at the back, where he fired three back-to-back birdies in the opening holes and capped the monster 17th hole with a birdie. He dropped a shot in the front but countered it off with a birdie to seal the day at 3-under
par 69.
The player relished a success rate of 83 percent in Green Hits in Regulation, which meant he missed only three fairways.
2010 American Ryder Cup striker, Corey Pavin occupied the 28th spot by composing a score of 69. He birdied four holes on Friday after opening the round at par. The American improved considerably in his putting and long game, which is why he made
the cut into the third round.
