Highlights from the second round of RBC Canadian Open – Part 2
Charl Schwartzel decided to please his fans by making a superb comeback in the second round. The South African, who wrapped the opening round with a 71, started the day with a bogey. The early blow was sudden, but it did not hamper Schwartzel’s confidence.
The winner of the 2011 Masters marched forward and clawed two birdies against a single bogey to seal the day at par.
On his way to the back nine, the player gathered three birdies without dropping a single shot and wrapped the day with a 67.
Commenting on the severity of the course, the player said, “It's a nice course. It's tree-lined and tough, you know. Week in and week out, the course seems to be easier than it used to be. You get tired of playing it off the tee and not playing well and
still being well in the tournament. I think now and again it's good to play a golf course like this to see who the best players are.”
Rickie Fowler compiled a 69 for the second day and managed to make the cut. The rookie suffered in his long game, but despite that, he managed to card three birdies against two bogeys. The 22-year-old seemed to be lost on the course, only managing to find
five fairways. His poor start set the pace of the rest of the day, as he faltered in his shot making and putting. However, the player didn’t feel too let down when he spoke to reporters.
“So I'm happy. You know, I finally made some good swings there at the end, so I definitely got some confidence for the weekend and in a good spot for the weekend,” said Fowler regarding his swings.
Meanwhile, Australia’s Geoff Ogilvy improved folds in putting, which reflected on his scorecard. The player teed-off from the front and birdied two holes against a single bogey. He marched towards the back, and without altering his game plan, fired two more
birdies after attacking the green directly. The plan worked for the player and he sealed the day with a 68.
Lucas Glover and Ben Crane took the 12th place by carding a matching score in both the rounds. They posted 69 and 70 respectively. Glover, who is carrying a great form these days, carded four birdies against four bogeys and so did Crane.
Despite bearing a matching score, Glover performed better than his compatriot. He attained a success rate of 61 percent in Green Hits in Regulation, and found eleven of the eighteen greens.
