Highlights from the second round of Wells Fargo Championship – Part1
Wells Fargo Championship has stepped into the third round with Pat Perez in the lead. The $6.5-million Professional Golf Association (PGA) Tour event is taking place at the par-72 Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. Here is a quick recap for the day.
Pat Perez smashed a score of 7-under-par, 65 with the help of nine birdies to surge into lead. The American dropped only two shots in the 18-hole session and finished second in putting average.
The leader was followed by first round pacesetter Bill Haas and Jonathan Byrd.
Hass teed off from the front and once again tried to play safe, but in doing so, he picked only three birdies. The American dropped a single shot and relished a success rate of 89 percent in Green Hits in Regulation, which portrayed his prowess over the
treacherous fairways of Quail Hollow Club.
When asked to comment on his game, Haas said, “It's hard to shoot 64-64-64. I mean, it is just -- the ball doesn't go in the hole that much. But I just basically wanted to try to hit it like I hit it yesterday and give myself chances, which I felt like I
did today pretty well.”
Meanwhile, Byrd who won the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in the start of the season, teed off from the back and compiled an aggregate of 10-under-par. He birdied two of the three opening holes, which geared him for a superb start. Carrying the momentum
onto the next holes, Byrd picked another birdie and wrapped the first half with a score of 1-under-par.
Byrd was a treat to watch on the front after the rain-delay. The greens were slippery and softer, which helped the player in picking three more birdies with 100 percent putting accuracy.
The fourth place was occupied by Phil Mickelson and Lucas Glover. The runner-up from last year utilized his chemistry with the course to the fullest and produced a flawless scorecard. He chose to tee off from the back, birdied three holes, picked three more
at the front and wrapped the day with a score of 6-under-par, 66.
The American had been on a break since his appearance in the Masters and he seems to be enjoying the rest he had. He lacked accuracy in driving, but knew where to plan the shot. His perfect putting helped him finish in fourth place.
While talking to the press Mickelson said, “I had some really good iron play today. I hit a few more - it seemed like I was playing a little bit more, too, early on not as much, but towards the end there I started hitting some good drives and had some chances
for birdies.”
