Highlights of Sevilla FC's 2010-11 Spanish top flight campaign – La Liga Campaign (Part 2)
Sevilla had to brace themselves for anything in the upcoming campaign after witnessing their horror shows in front of the goalkeeper. The defence leaked a whopping 61 goals at an average of 1.61 goals per game, a tally matched by none in the top half of
the table. Things were made even more complicated by injuries to key players. The lady luck certainly didn’t fancy the club’s cause.
Injuries to key players hindered their progress and did not allow them any consistency in the league. Jesus Navas was on the treatment table for much of the season. The mercurial winger was troubled by his left ankle twice during the length of the season.
What was expected to be a problem of twisted ankle in late September turned into a serious concern by November, when the winger underwent surgery. He was out until January, making an appearance for the first team on the second day of the new year against CA
Osasuna.
Navas did not stay fit for long; he was back on the treatment table as early as April. It was a relapse of the problem he had faced before and was sidelined for six weeks. This meant that Sevilla would be without their most creative player.
Tiberio Guarente was also sidelined for the better part of the campaign with his fair share of injuries. He was sidelined for six months following the diagnosis as Los Rojiblancos played without two of their first team regulars in the league. The Sevillistas
had pinned their hopes on the Italian for creativity from the midfield but had their joy cut in the middle as the player took part in only three league games before his ill-timed injury.
Problems in the backroom were a big reason for Los Rojiblancos’ failings on the field, in addition to prolonged injuries to players and a leaky defence. With Antonio Alvarez being shown the door so early into the season, it was a big set back to the squad
on the whole. He was replaced by the authoritarian Gregorio Manzano and it was a frosty relationship at the start.
Manzano improved the Performances of the club in the league, with Sevilla beating competing teams emphatically. Atletico Madrid, Athletic Bilbao and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863 tasted dust as they came up against Manzano’s charges. However, the defensive frailties of the club
were exposed yet again as they took the ground against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Barcelona-c39078 and Real Madrid CF.
Floodgates were opened in the replay of the Spanish Super Cup, as Barcelona hosted Sevilla. The Catalans went one better this time, improving on their tally of 4 goals from last time. At Camp Nou, the defence completely crumbled as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lionel-Messi-c22296 led his team
to a complete rout of the top four hopefuls. The 5-0 bashing they received was a reminder that they had defensive problems, yet they were ignored.
Real Madrid inflicted more misery on Sevilla in the closing stages of the campaign, as they beat their opponents in front of their home crowd. Los Blancos scored six goals as they downed Los Rojiblancos at Roman Sanchez Pizjuan. Things would have been worse
had Andres Palop not been there. The captain stood alone repelling wave after wave of Galactic raids. This coming after he had to pick the ball six times out of his own net goes on to show how pathetic the defence was.
