  1. you would become highly qualified if:

look for an organization that have a regid training on this

be a proactive member of it

take your master's degree on it

do concentrate more on special education you have

research, get acquaintance and be acquainted with people who have special training and awards on this.

    Goodluck!

  2. It really depends on the state.  I have my BS in Psych and just got my MA in Sped.  I am highly qualified to teach sped ages 3-21.

Usually only if you want to teach high school do you need to be highly qualified to teach a certain subject.  Think about it, elementary teachers teach all subjects.. so it would be pretty impossible to be highly qualified in everything.

I can totally appreciate your confusion on this, I was there once too!  Basically, get your MA in Sped and people will be begging you to teach... there is a huge need for it!  Good Luck!

  3. you get points for related education--

    college courses, continuing ed etc.

a geneal ed teacher is easy to become highly qualified--most of your non degree courses in history, science, english, and math count..

if you are in a self contained special ed class-teaching all subjects-you woudl fall into thsi category..

if you teach a specific subject-you need to be highly qualified in that subject--

instead of spreading your points over all content areas--you have to get all your points in 1 area...

To be highly qualified to teach science to special students--you need your teachign credential as well as a set number of points in Science--soem states require HQ in a specific science-i.e biology

  4. You need to choose one area or your initial certification. You are getting certified in special ed., correct? Attain this license and after you've received it, you should be able to add endorsements by taking a state content exam and proving that you have adequate coursework in each area. Check your state's department of education website. You will be certified in special ed. and most likely, ages 5-21. Can your school explain this to you?

  5. A master's degree usually is enough to be considered "highly qualified" - in some places, just being certified for the field in which you are teaching qualifies.  If you don't want any doubt, go for your National Teacher's Certification.

  6. In my state, to be highly qualified in elementary education prior to finishing your second degree (or other plan to earn licensure) you must pass the Praxis tests as designated for your state.  Coursework would also be required.

This can be a very tricky process.  Please call your STATE department of education's licensure division to be certain.

I would imagine to be a special education teacher you would need a certain number of hours AND at least some (six hours perhaps) under your belt before they allow you to teach.

Again, please call your state on the matter!
