Normally i wont drive long distance in winter, but this time i absolutely need to go into the city. Its about a 6 hour drive from here, and the freeways near the city are sooo busy. What are some tips to avoid an accident and drive safely in winter?

  1. DISTANCE keep a distance away from the person in front of you

  2. I second the above suggestions.

Leaving enough distance is one of the best safety tips for driving, but yet most people don't follow it (especially in urban areas).  Remember, if you're somewhere where it could be wet or icy, your stoping distance increases quite a bit in adverse conditions.

For such a long drive, be sure your car is in working order.  Carry a cell phone that gets reception for at least a majority of the route.

Knowing your route will allow you to be relaxed and confident and thus have more attention for the road and other drivers.  Print directions off of map quest (or other driving direction site), just in case you forget - I always feel better having them, even if I don't need them.  Use your trip odometer to gauge distances between navigational points, especially on long road trips. (This avoids the "how long has it been since that left turn in Albuquerque?  did I pass my next turn?" feeling.)

Also, to avoid traffic and angry / hurried drivers, see if you can time your trip around arriving in the city when it will be rush hour.  If you can leave early to arrive and get your business taken care of in the city between ten and three, you can avoid a lot of traffic - at least, that's when most cities' rush hours are.  If you're not stuck in traffic, you'll also save time in commute.

  3. Don't get in a hurry, plan the route and know the exits, streets and routes you need.  Don't let anyone get to you - rage is for experienced drivers and psychopaths only!

  4. Not all roads are salted .

Take special care on housing estates and lightly trafficked roads.

Putting salt on roads helps prevent the formation of ice.

However, salt can be washed from the road by rain or melting snow.

Salt spreading vehicles can also be delayed by bad weather or heavy traffic.

Salt becomes less effective in extreme conditions.

The Highway Authority normally treats major routes as a priority, meaning that other roads do not receive attention straight away.

Therefore it is important to remember that on untreated road you must drive with extreme caution.

    keep your speed down

    avoid harsh steering

    brake and accelerate slowly

beware of vulnerable road users e.g. pedestrians and cyclists

use dipped headlights and fog-lights in fog and snow

    don't use cruise control

  5. Defensive driving is the key. It helps to have the biggest vehicle possible too.

  6. slow down take your time use gentle force on your brakes to prevent sliding ease onto the gas from a stop to prevent spinning increase your following distance no sudden jerks in steering make sure all your lights are working so others can see you that wipers are in good shape so you can see them.

hope this will help you driving in the snow.
