im a "new" vegetarian. I have only been one since January and i am learning more and more about it everyday! one thing i am starting to learn is just because it's not meat doesnt mean it doesnt contain animal. For instance.. marshmellows, jello, and anything "gummy" contains geletin. which is ground up animal bone.

So im wondering if anyone knows of anyother foods that have "hidden" animal in them that i need to avoid! Thank you ahead of time! your help is greatly appreciated

  1. ok, first thing, gelatin is boiled fur, hooves, bones, etc. Resteraunt style sour cream has gelatin. some yoghurt, Always check before buying or eating. Also, beware of rennet. It is the lining of a cows stomach. It is in some cheeses. Mostly parmesian. The cheddar in pizza luncheables has it to. Don't assume something wouldn't have something in it. Always ceck first. Hope i helped!

  2. Look for "lard" or "Gelatin" in any ingredients..

    Lard is pig fat..

  3. watch out for "tallow" something from beef bones, gets put in frozen veggies like fries.  good for you for trying to be veggie - it is a bit of work, remember you'll need to read labels more now.  good rule of thumb - if you cannot pronounce it DO NOT eat it - if you do not know what it is - DO NOT eat it.  another thing i just thought of is "Bonito" found in some Aisan foods - fish powder.  and sometimes in Ice Cream you'll see some of the things you mention above.  YOU CAN do this - just be vigilant.  :)  a veggie Mom

  4. Many cheeses contain animal rennet

  5. Try the "stumbling blocks" page from the vegetarian society, that'll give you some guidance:

    http://www.vegsoc.org/info/stumbling.htm...

It'll take just 5 minutes to read the page and its well worth it.

If it doesn't say "suitable for vegetarians" and you don't know all the ingredients and the manufacturing process then you cannot be sure and will be guessing a bit. Products used during processing but only being "trace" in the final product do not have to mention the item in the ingredients list. One example of this is a beef derivative that is used in washing SOME ( not all by any means ) tinned vegetables. So, what looks like a tin of carrots in brine might actually not be vegetarian.

The page above refers to a whole host of other products such as yogurts, wines, beers, candy etc etc..

It'll get easier, i think being veggie probably adds less that 5 minutes to our weekly food shopping.

  6. Ice cream - in the listing of ingredients, there is an ingredient which 'may' come from a plant OR animal source, they don't say...

  7. Congrats on becoming a vegetarian.  You have made a wise choice.  Vegetarians also can't have anything with honey because it comes from bees.

  8. Many cheeses have "hidden" animal in them. Look to see if the cheeses you buy or which are in the things you buy contain rennet. This is essentially ground-up stomach lining.
