Question:

Hiking the Appalachian Trail, Passport?

I'm planning on hiking the Appalachian Trail this year, but I was wondering if I need to carry my passport while on the trail on New Hampshire and Maine since I’ll be near the Canadian border? Have you ever been stopped by Immigration officers while on the Trail as it happens in the southern border at the PCT?

  1. I wouldn't carry it on the AT, unless of course you're visiting the U.S. in which case you should take with you everywhere. If you have some form of state issued ID like a drivers license you'll be fine. The only thing you'd really have to worry about with border patrol in those areas is getting searched for drugs and thats pretty unlikely. Good luck!

  2. you are not going to be THAT close to the Canadian border, the AT stops at Mt Kadadin and that is near mid state.

You should carry a drivers license or a state issued ID.
