Okay, growing up, my parents were very social and would invite 2-3 families over the weekend. And every single time, my parents would open a bag of Doritos, pour it onto a plate, and serve it as appetizers. And then they would bust out the Coke or Sprite? Looking back it was embarrasing b/c Dorito chips is not what I call an "appetizer" lol. And the funny thing is that my mom would take 4 hrs to cook and prepare food, and then what does she do...she gets lazy and opens up a bag of potato chips as the main appetizer lol

Anybody else here have parents that do/did that?

  1. No lol, appetizers are the easiest of all-just fry some kebabs or tikkas or cheese balls...my parents always have some really cool appetizers, as well as chips with some awesome dip. That's a classic.

But true, that can't be ur only appetizer :p

  2. Heehee, that's pretty funny! My parents never did that. Actually, my parents rarely have dinner parties at all, so your family is already one step ahead of mine!

But I have to say, your mom definitely isn't lazy if she spent 4 hours preparing a meal!

I do think there is a bit of an imbalance though in terms of preparation. I don't mean to insult your mom - I'm sure her dinners are lovely. But it's kind of like owning a million-dollar home and driving a junk car! It's just a little disproportionate. But I guess if she and everyone else is fine with it, then what's the harm?

I suppose you could try your hand at preparing appetizers for the next dinner party, but it's entirely up to you!

  3. every parent has a choice of dinner menue

  4. U calling a lady lazy who cooked for 4 hours. In fact embarrassment is u not yr mom. Instead of criticising did u ever help her? I am sure people who used to come over yr mom's dinner parties must have enjoyed it very much. I think One ho is right, wait till u have yr own place.

  5. Maybe she thought the food she cooked might not be to anyone's taste/liking that's why she opened the Doritos. To be safe. No one I know doesn't like chips! Wait till you have your own place, then you will know!

  6. I see what you mean.  Even crackers and cheese would be more elegant than Doritos.  But Doritos are funnier (maybe she was going for irony).

  7. Well said Sculptress, I gave you a big thumbs up!

  8. When we were growing up those were treat foods only reserved for parties.  A woman with a family that cooks for four hours and has people over is not lazy. Some people only allowed themselves to have these treats at someone else's house.  Now we have them all the time and it is confusing as to why this would be done but I think your mom was a great hostess.  I'm sure none of her guests felt cheated.

  9. lol i know what you mean but thats usually at like family parties and stuff

  10. We used to enjoy and invited friends, but not 'gains'..............

  11. Thats normal..there are just being conversavative and productive..Everyone wants to save TIME!!
