Hillcross’ win at Oxford is no Secret
Greyhound racing fans were treated to yet another action-packed afternoon at the Oxford Greyhound Stadium in Oxford. The 14-race 450m card featured races that were full of big wins, painful losses, and valiant efforts from all participating dogs.
The first race of the afternoon was an A9 race that was held at 14:21. Hillcross Secret was billed as the favourite going into the race, with 9-4 odds. There was no secret to his victory, as he won the race in 28.07 seconds from trap four. He crowded first, but led second to earn the win. In second place was Next Champ (4-1), who was 1¼ lengths behind the winner with a time of 28.17. Perhaps he will be the next champ in his next race.
Prima Star (5-1) finished third in 28.26, which was good for one length behind Next Champ. All his preparation failed to pay off for Hard Work (6-1), who placed fourth in 28.50, three lengths behind the third spot. Coming out of trap three, Hard Work crowded first, which cost him the win.
Hard Luck Emma (5-2) lived up to her name with a fifth-position finish in this race. She finished in 28.57, which was one length behind fourth. Sixth place was the thorn in Friendship Rose’s (5-1) side, who finished behind Hard Luck Emma in 32.14, with a great deal of distance separating fifth place from sixth.
In the 14:38 A8 race, Terrydrum Terry (3-1) ran to the beat of his own drummer, and earned the win with a time of 27.14. Despite the win, he was not the favourite of this race. That honour went to Roadstown Magic, who locked up second place in 27.48, 4¼ lengths behind Terrydrum Terry. Odds makers staked Roadstown Magic with 2-1 odds before the race, but he failed to deliver the predicted result.
Burwood Layla (4-1) cruised to a third-place finish with a time of 27.67. This placed her 2¼ lengths behind second place. The fourth position belonged to General Classic (4-1), who tied Burwood Layla’s time of 27.68 to earn his position by a shoulder.
Rounding out the pack were Droopys Claudine (4-1) and Farran Fantasy (6-1), who placed fifth and sixth, respectively. Droopys Claudine ended up with a time of 27.96, which was 3½ lengths behind fourth place. Farran Fantasy was one lengths behind fifth place, and finished the race in 28.13.
The A4 race at 14:52 saw a great performance from a favourite. Mooreville Girl (2-1 favourite) held an early pace, and soon led to emerge victorious with a great finishing time of 26.93. This put her 4½ lengths ahead of High Queen (9-4), who checked in with a regal time of 27.29 to take second place.
Two lengths behind High Queen was Milton Cooper (7-2), who picked up the third spot in 27.45. In fourth place was Hycos Tiger (8-1), who completed the race in 27.61, two lengths behind Milton Cooper.
Champ of Aherlow (5-1) was no champ in this race, as he finished in 28.17 to earn fifth place. He was a big seven lengths behind Hycos Tiger. He crowed the first bend and second, which led to the large gap between fourth and fifth place. Finally, Roadstown Nimnum (4-1) finished the race in last place with a time of 28.71. He crowded second very badly, and ended up 6¾ lengths behind Champ of Aherlow.
The next race night at Oxford Greyhound Stadium is being called for 2 September, with the first race slated to begin at 19:25. Racing fans will be retreated to yet another exciting 14-race card.
