The most effective simple thing I know of is to unplug appliances and electronic devices when they are not in use.  They drain energy even when they are not in use.

Use CFLs they use 80% less power and are responsible for around 10% of average household consumption so they will reduce your usage by around 8%

Turn off your stuff when not using it stand by uses around 20% of average house hold usage

thats up to 28% with out spending alot thats a good start
