So, I'm a freshman in highschool and I run indoor and outdoor track, which is about 7 months of the year. Anyway, I noticed durng my indoor season every so often that I walked around the house, my hip would click, snap, whatever you'd call it, on the left side only. then in outdoor it clicked constantly, and sometimes very loud (my mom even heard it once and flipped out), I noticed also my knee on my left leg or my ankle would hurt randomly sometimes too(I don't know if that has anything to do with it but I thought possibly because its all the left side) my season has ended but it still clicks and I ran a 5K on saturday and it clicks alot more now. does anyone have/know what this is? My parents want me to get checked out by an orthopedist

  1. I would agree with your parents. Running track is really hard on your joints. I have an older yoga friend who used to be a runner all her life. Now, in her thirties, she has had to have her hip replaced. Yikes!

  2. Parents are always right.

  3. It could be that you have hip bursitis or it could be your IT band. I had the exact same problem and it caused me a lot of pain when running. I was told that it was from improper training and the only thing you can do to make it better is to stretch better and warm up your muscles before you run. I had to go to physical therapy, but you just need to try to stay off of it and to stretch a lot even when you aren't running. If it persists and causes you pain you need to go to the doctor. Good Luck!

  4. Sometimes, actually, alot of the times runners tend to forget the the hips are supporting your running legs, so that means you need to have strong hips.   Popping Hip Syndrome is what it sounds like you have, but best to confirm with the doctor.   Exercising/strengthening your hips can help prevent future injuries (IT Band, knees, etc).

Here is a link to help strengthen your hips:

If problem persists, then go see a doctor.  Really its nothing serious, unless it becomes a problem/pain.

  5. sounds to me like you are working hard..good luck
