Question:

Hippy Hair styles?

I'm in a local theatre production of the hippy broadway hit, Hair. I know all about the style of the show and all that, but I have pretty short hair and don't have many ideas of how to style it for the show. It's naturally wavy, and very full, so I'll have to blow dry or straighten it, otherwise it gets too poofy, but I'm not sure if I should just let it be, or not. Any ideas would be much appreciated!

  1. "Poofy" is fine.  No one can say that the character you play might not have had naturally poofy hair.

As far as longer hair, this might not necessarily apply to young women's styles of the day.  Many girls cut their hair extremely short, in the same spirit of rebellion that young men and boys wore theirs short.

Dont forget, that as an actress, you ALWAYS have the option of wearing a wig while in character.  You can find inexpensive ones at local thrift stores.  Avoid any that look "styled" in any way.  But, like natural hair, some could be straight, curly, wavy and anything in between.  It doesn't have to be a good quality wig.  From the audience, that kind of detail won't be noticable.

  2. Ideally you should wear a long wig or half wig so you have long hair like the hippies used to. Clip in some flowers and you will be set.

If you leave your hair natural have it pouffed up and you must at least clip in some flowers to get a hippy look.

Short hair was often worn in an elfin cut by girls at that time  but not by hippies.

Incidentally a comment on previous answers - Hairdriers had been invented and were used in the 60s and 70s.

  3. Well hippies don't have blow dryers so in my opinuin u should just leave it be.. if that helps?
