Ever since I can remember, my hips have popped when I walk sometimes. It doesn't hurt, it just feels like some thing's cracking in and out of place. I've noticed it more since I've been walking and exercising more. I figure it's normal, since I've had it all my life, but I'm not sure.

  2. Although you have lived with this for a long time it is not normal. There are various reasons for the popping hips.

This is also called the snapping hip syndrome.

This is very commonly due to tightnening of the  of muscles on the lateral side of the thigh which cause abduction. In such people the iliotibial band is also tight.

When the rotation of the leg changes the iliotibial band

pops over the greater trochanter causing the pop.

In dancers who stand over one leg the greater trochanter pops out visibly.

These popping hips should be shown to an orthopaedic surgeon who then determines the cause and gives the necessary advice.

With age popping hips may be a cause of many problems including alterations of posture.
